Tiera Guinn Fletcher is an American aerospace engineer. She helps design and analyze parts for NASA's Space Launch System.

Growing Up and Discovering Space

Tiera Guinn Fletcher was born in Georgia, near Atlanta. Her mom, Sheila, is an accountant, and her dad, Emery Guinn Jr., is a construction worker. Her parents taught her to measure and calculate things every day. These activities, like counting grocery costs and learning about buildings, made Tiera think differently. When she was eleven, she became very interested in Aerospace engineering. This happened when she joined a special program by Lockheed Martin that focused on aerospace.

Education and Learning

Tiera went to Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia. In her last year of high school, she got an internship at NASA in Langley, Virginia. She also had a research internship at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2014. There, she helped study how aircraft land.

Tiera then went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In June 2017, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. She even helped other students at MIT through a special program. After her first year, Tiera researched how to make aircraft designs better at MIT.

During her third and fourth years of college, Tiera had internships at Boeing. From June 2015 to June 2016, she was a Systems Engineering Intern. She helped design, test, and work with others on Boeing products. The next year, from June 2016 to June 2017, Tiera was a design engineer and stress analyst intern at Boeing. She helped design and analyze parts for NASA's Space Launch System.

Building Rockets for NASA

After finishing college at MIT, Tiera started working at Boeing as a Structural Analysis Engineer. She is one of the main engineers and designers for NASA's Space Launch System. This huge rocket is being built to send humans to Mars.

Tiera works on the upper part of the spacecraft. This part helps the rocket fly higher into space. She is also part of the team that leads the Engine Section Task. She is the youngest person on this important team.

Awards and Recognition

Tiera has received several important awards for her work.

  • In 2017, she won the Good Housekeeping's Awesome Woman Award. This award honors women who make a positive impact on the world.
  • Also in 2017, Tiera received the Albert G. Hill Prize at MIT. This prize is given to students who do well in their studies and improve the campus for other minority students.
  • In June 2018, Tiera was a main speaker at an event called Impact'18 in Krakow. At this event, speakers share new ideas and business models with the world.
  • On November 8, 2018, Tiera won the Most Promising Engineer, Industry Award. This was at the 2019 Black Engineer of the Year Awards.

Personal Life

Tiera married Myron Fletcher in July 2017. Myron is also an aerospace engineer and works at Boeing as a pilot. Both Tiera and Myron want to encourage young people to join STEM fields. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. They also want to see more different kinds of people working in these fields.
