Tiera's Early Life
Tiera Guinn Fletcher was born in the Atlanta area of Georgia. Her mom, Sheila, is an accountant, and her dad, Emery Guinn, Jr., is a construction worker. Her parents always encouraged her to calculate and measure things in her daily life.
These activities, like clipping coupons, adding up grocery bills, and learning about how buildings are designed, really challenged Tiera. They also made her stand out from other kids her age. When she was just eleven years old, she discovered her passion for Aerospace engineering. This happened while she was part of an aerospace program run by Lockheed Martin.
Her Journey in Education
Tiera Fletcher went to Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia. During her last year of high school, Tiera got an internship at NASA in Langley, Virginia. She also got a research internship at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2014. This internship involved helping with research on how aircraft land.
Studying at MIT
Tiera Fletcher then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering in June 2017. She graduated with a perfect GPA of 5.0! Tiera also helped other students at MIT by participating in a mentorship program.
After her first year, Tiera took part in undergraduate research. She studied how to make aircraft designs even better at MIT. During her third and fourth years of college, Tiera had internships at Boeing.
Internships at Boeing
From June 2015 to June 2016, Tiera was a Systems Engineering Intern at Boeing. She helped design, test, and work with other experts on Boeing products. The next year, from June 2016 to June 2017, Tiera was a design engineer and stress analyst intern at Boeing. In this role, she helped with the design and analysis of the Space Launch System for NASA.
Her Career at NASA
After graduating from MIT, Tiera Fletcher started working at Boeing as a Structural Analysis Engineer. She is one of the main engineers and designers working on the Space Launch System for NASA. This huge project aims to send humans to Mars!
Tiera works on the upper part of the spacecraft, called the exploratory upper stage. This part helps the craft complete its journey into space. She is also part of the Engine Section Task Leading team, which is responsible for this important section. She is the youngest member of this team!
Awards and Recognition
Tiera Fletcher has received several important awards for her work and achievements.
- In 2017, she received the Good Housekeeping's Awesome Woman Award. This award celebrates women who are making a positive impact on the world. They recognize those who overcome challenges and inspire others.
- Also in 2017, Tiera received the Albert G. Hill Prize at MIT. This award recognizes students in their junior or senior year who have done very well academically. It also honors those who have improved the campus environment for other minorities.
- In June 2018, Tiera was a keynote speaker at Impact'18 in Krakow. At this event, speakers share their innovations and business models with the world.
- On November 8, 2018, Tiera won the Most Promising Engineer, Industry Award at the 2019 Black Engineer of the Year Awards.
Tiera's Personal Life
Tiera Fletcher married Myron Fletcher in July 2017. Myron is also an aerospace engineer and works at Boeing as a pilot. Both Tiera and Myron are passionate about inspiring young people to get involved in STEM fields. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. They also want to see more diversity in these important areas.
