Timothy Ferriss (born July 20, 1977) is an American entrepreneur, investor, author, and podcaster. He is known for his "4-Hour" book series. These books, like The 4-Hour Workweek, The 4-Hour Body, and The 4-Hour Chef, offer tips on how to improve your life and work. Timothy Ferriss has since changed some of his ideas about these topics.

Early Life and Education

Timothy Ferriss grew up in East Hampton, New York. When he was a child, he often had health problems. This made him interested in finding ways to improve himself.

After finishing high school at St. Paul's School, he went to Princeton University. He earned a degree in East Asian studies in 2000. For his final project, he wrote about learning the Japanese writing. After college, Ferriss worked in sales for a company that stored computer data.

Career Highlights

In 2001, Ferriss started his own online business called BrainQUICKEN. This company sold special food supplements. He ran this business while still working at his other job. In 2010, he sold the company. He later said that his book The 4-Hour Workweek was inspired by his experiences running this business.

Investing in New Companies

Ferriss has also been an angel investor and advisor for new companies, called startups. An angel investor is someone who provides money to help new businesses get started. He invested in or advised companies like Reputation.com, Trippy, and TaskRabbit. He also advised Uber when it was just starting.

In 2013, Ferriss helped raise money for a company called Shyp. He gathered $250,000 from other investors. Shyp eventually raised over $2 million in total. However, Shyp closed down in 2018.

In 2015, Ferriss decided to take a break from investing. He said the work was stressful and he felt his impact was small. He wanted to spend more time on his writing and other media projects. He also moved away from Silicon Valley, a famous area for tech companies, because he no longer needed to be there for investing.

Books and Publishing

Timothy Ferriss has written five books:

  • The 4-Hour Workweek (first published in 2007)
  • The 4-Hour Body (2010)
  • The 4-Hour Chef (2012)
  • Tools of Titans (2016)
  • Tribe of Mentors (2017)

In November 2013, Ferriss started his own company to publish audiobooks. These are books you can listen to. Some of the books he published include Vagabonding by Rolf Potts, and Ego Is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday.

TV Shows and Podcasts

In December 2013, a TV show called The Tim Ferriss Experiment started on HLN. This show explored Ferriss's ways of making life easier and learning things quickly. He also hosted another TV show in 2017 called Fear{Less} with Tim Ferriss. In this show, he interviewed successful people about how they achieved their goals.

In 2017, Timothy Ferriss gave a TED Talk titled "Why you should define your fears instead of your goals."

Since April 2014, Ferriss has hosted The Tim Ferriss Show. This is a popular podcast where he interviews many different people.

New Perspectives

In a 2020 interview, Ferriss shared that he had rethought some of his earlier ideas. He realized that "not everything that is meaningful can be measured." He has become more interested in ideas like being strong when things are tough and even spiritual topics. He suggests reading books like Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach and Letters From a Stoic by Lucius Seneca. He calls Seneca's book his "favorite writing of all time."

In December 2022, Ferriss launched an NFT project. NFTs are unique digital items.
