Timba's History and Name
The area now known as Timba has a rich history. Its original name was Orestimba, which meant "meeting place" in the Yokuts language. This spot was an important gathering place for Mission padres (who were Christian priests) and the local Yokuts Native American tribes.
Later, the town of Orestimba was moved a bit to the east. This move happened because of the railroad, which was a very important way to travel and transport goods back then. When the town moved, its name was shortened from Orestimba to Timba.
Orestimba was officially formed in 1854. In that same year, Stanislaus County was created from parts of Tuolumne County, California. John M. Newsome was chosen as the first supervisor for the Orestimba area by the judges of the new Stanislaus County.
