Timothy Robbins Stanley was an important figure during the American Civil War. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on May 14, 1810, and passed away on July 8, 1874. During the war, he served as a Colonel leading the 18th Ohio Infantry.

He was later recognized for his brave actions and excellent service throughout the war. On March 13, 1865, he received a special honor called a "brevet" to the rank of Brigadier General in the United States Volunteers. This honor was given for his "gallant and meritorious services," meaning he showed great courage and did a fantastic job. He also led a group of soldiers, known as a brigade, during the important Battle of Stones River.

Early Life and Public Service

Timothy Robbins Stanley was born in Connecticut. Before the Civil War, he was already involved in public service. He worked as a lawyer, helping people with legal matters.

He also served in the government of Ohio. In 1846, he represented Lawrence County in the Ohio Legislature. This is where laws are made for the state. Later, from 1860 to 1861, he was a member of the Ohio Senate. This shows he was dedicated to his community and state even before the war began.

After the war, he continued to be an important person in business. He was a leading member of the company that built the Eagle furnace, which was likely involved in making metal. He also helped start the First National Bank, where he served as vice-president.

Service in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began in 1861, Timothy Robbins Stanley joined the Union Army. He became a Colonel, which is a high rank, and took command of the 18th Ohio Infantry regiment. A regiment is a military unit made up of many soldiers.

His service lasted throughout most of the war, from 1861 to 1865. He led his troops in several key battles and campaigns. These were important events that shaped the course of the war.

Key Battles and Campaigns

Colonel Stanley and his 18th Ohio Infantry participated in many significant military actions:

  • Siege of Nashville: A siege is when an army surrounds a city or fort to try and capture it.
  • Battle of Stones River: This was a very tough battle fought in Tennessee. Colonel Stanley commanded a brigade, which is a larger group of soldiers than a regiment, during this fight.
  • Tullahoma Campaign: This was a series of military movements and smaller battles aimed at pushing the Confederate army out of Middle Tennessee.
  • Battle of Chickamauga: This was another major battle in the Western Theater of the war, fought near Chickamauga Creek in Georgia.

His leadership in these battles showed his bravery and skill as a military commander. The brevet promotion to Brigadier General at the end of the war was a recognition of his valuable contributions to the Union cause.

Later Years

After the Civil War ended, Timothy Robbins Stanley returned to civilian life. He continued to be active in his community and in business. He passed away in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on July 8, 1874, and was buried in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. His life showed a strong commitment to both public service and the development of his community.
