The Tioga River is a river about 12.8 miles (20.6 km) long. It flows through the beautiful Lakes Region in central New Hampshire, United States. This river is like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger one. It joins the Winnipesaukee River. Both rivers are part of the larger Merrimack River watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a specific river or lake.

Where the Tioga River Flows

The Tioga River begins on the western side of the Belknap Mountains. This is in a town called Gilmanton, New Hampshire. From there, the river flows west.

Journey Through Belmont

The river quickly enters the town of Belmont. It spends most of its journey here. The Tioga River flows through a small body of water called Badger Pond. After this, it reaches the main part of Belmont village.

People built Belmont village along the Tioga River a long time ago. This was in the 1800s. They used the river's waterpower to run mills and factories.

Reaching the Winnipesaukee River

The Tioga River continues flowing west. It then reaches a wide wetland area. This area is right on the border between Belmont and Northfield.

Finally, the Tioga River ends its journey. It flows into the Winnipesaukee River. This meeting point is close to where Silver Lake empties out.

Following the River

If you drive on New Hampshire Route 140, you can follow the river's path. This road generally runs alongside the Tioga River. It goes from Belmont village all the way to the Winnipesaukee River.
