Tippecanoe is a small community located in Marshall County, Indiana, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that the government counts for population and statistics, even though it doesn't have its own official town government. Tippecanoe gets its name from the nearby Tippecanoe River.

A Look Back at Tippecanoe's Past

Tippecanoe started to be settled in 1882. However, the very first "Tippecanoe Town" was planned out earlier, in 1850. This original town was located about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of where Tippecanoe is today. It was named after the Tippecanoe River, which flowed along its southern edge.

The name "Tippecanoe" comes from a Miami-Illinois word. This word described the "buffalo fish," which is a type of fish found in rivers. Later, when a railroad was built about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the original town, the community decided to move closer to the new railway. The old location then became known as Old Tip Town.

Another small settlement called Benack's Village was located about 1.4 miles (2.3 km) east-northeast of Tippecanoe. It was across the Tippecanoe River in what is now Potawatomi Wildlife Park.

The U.S. Census Bureau states that the Tippecanoe CDP covers an area of 0.61 square miles (1.58 km²), and all of this area is land. The Tippecanoe River flows southwest from the town and eventually joins the Wabash River north of Lafayette.
