A Look Back at Tipton's History
Tipton started as a town in 1872. It was first called Pittsburg. However, people soon found out there was already another Pittsburg in Kansas. To avoid confusion, the name was changed to Tipton. This new name came from Tipton, Iowa, which was the former home of someone who lived in the area.

Tipton is a very small city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city covers a total area of about 0.26 square miles (0.65 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no water.

In 2010, the census counted 210 people living in Tipton. There were 98 homes in the city. The city had about 807 people per square mile. Most of the people living in Tipton were White (98.1%). A small number (1.9%) were Asian.

Schools in the Community
The public schools in Tipton are part of the Waconda USD 272 school district. This district runs two schools for students. Lakeside Elementary School is in Cawker City. Lakeside High School is in Downs.
In the past, Tipton had its own schools: Tipton Elementary School and Tipton Junior High School. Today, Tipton Catholic High School is still located within the community.
