Tiryns facts for kids
Tiryns (Ancient Greek: ἡ Τίρυνς) was an ancient Greek city built on a high hill. Its remains are found in the Peloponnese, a large area in southern Greece, close to the city of Nauplion. A famous archaeologist named Heinrich Schliemann dug up Tiryns in 1885 and 1886. Tiryns is so important that UNESCO (a group that protects special places) has listed it as a World Heritage Site, just like the nearby ancient city of Mycenae.

What Was Tiryns?
Tiryns was a very old city in ancient Greece. It was built on a strong, high hill, which made it a great place for defense. People lived here for thousands of years, even before the famous Trojan War.
A Strong Fortress
The city was known for its huge walls, which were made of giant stones. These walls were so big that people in later times thought giants must have built them! This is why they are sometimes called "Cyclopean walls," after the one-eyed giants from Greek myths. These walls helped protect the city and its people from enemies.
Life Inside the Walls
Inside these strong walls, there was a palace where the rulers lived. This palace had beautiful paintings called frescoes, showing scenes of daily life and hunting. There were also houses for other people, workshops, and places for storage.
Who Discovered Tiryns?
The ruins of Tiryns were first explored by archaeologists in the 1800s.
Heinrich Schliemann's Work
Heinrich Schliemann was a German archaeologist who became famous for finding the ancient city of Troy. He also worked at Tiryns in 1885 and 1886. His excavations helped us learn a lot about how people lived in this ancient city and what their buildings looked like.
Why is Tiryns Important?
Tiryns is a very important historical site because it helps us understand the Mycenaean culture.
A World Heritage Site
Because of its historical value and amazing ancient structures, Tiryns is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it's a special place that is protected and preserved for everyone to learn from and enjoy. It's listed together with Mycenae, another important Mycenaean city.
