The Tishomingo Hotel was a famous building in Corinth, Mississippi. It was built in 1859 and served as a hotel. But during the American Civil War, it became a very important military hospital. Sadly, it was burned down in 1865 by soldiers from the Confederate army.

Building the Tishomingo Hotel

The Tishomingo Hotel was a two-story building. It was finished in 1859. A Swiss architect named Martin Siegrist designed and built it. The hotel was in a great spot, very close to the train station. This made it easy for travelers to reach. In the back, there was a separate building for the kitchen. There were also other small buildings around the property.

A Hospital During Wartime

During the American Civil War, the Tishomingo Hotel became a hospital for soldiers. It helped fighters from both sides of the war.

Caring for Wounded Soldiers

  • In April 1862, after the Battle of Shiloh, the hotel was used by the Confederate army. They turned it into a hospital for their wounded soldiers.
  • Later that year, in October, the Union army took control of Corinth. After the Battle of Corinth, the hotel became a Union hospital.
  • The hotel also offered shelter to enslaved people who had escaped.

The Hotel's Final Days

In 1865, the Confederate army briefly took control of Corinth again. They used the Tishomingo Hotel as a place to store their supplies. This was like a big storage room for food, weapons, and other things soldiers needed.

Why the Hotel Was Burned

When the Confederate army, led by General John B. Hood, left Corinth, they decided to burn the hotel. They did this to stop the Union army from getting their hands on the supplies stored inside. On January 19, 1865, the Tishomingo Hotel was destroyed by fire.
