The Titipiti River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into Feuquières Lake. This river goes through two main areas:
- Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean: in the Lac-Ashuapmushuan, Quebec area.
- Nord-du-Québec: in the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James (municipality) area.
The river flows through the Ventadour and Feuquières regions. The main activity here is forestry, which means cutting down trees. Tourism, like visiting for fun, is also important. There is a logging camp near Ventadour Lake on a forest road.
Road 212 helps people get to the southern part of the Titipiti River Valley. This road connects Obedjiwan to La Tuque. Other forest roads, R1032 and R0212, also help people travel near the river.
The Titipiti River usually freezes over from early November to mid-May. It's generally safe to walk on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.
River's Journey
Valcourt Lake is located in Chibougamau Park. It is about 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) east of the border between the Eeyou Istchee James Bay (municipality) and Le Domaine-du-Roy Regional County Municipality. A mountain that is 550 metres (1,800 ft) high stands on the east side of Lake Valcourt.
The river flows for 28.6 kilometres (17.8 mi) from Valcourt Lake to Feuquières Lake. Along its path, it crosses a smaller lake called Vison Lake. The river winds through wet areas before reaching its mouth.
The Titipiti River empties into a bay on the south shore of Feuquières Lake. From there, the water flows north through Feuquières Lake. Then, it moves west to Robert Lake (Opawica River). After Robert Lake, the water goes through Dead Lake. Finally, it reaches Gabriel Lake (Opawica River tributary).
The water from Gabriel Lake then flows into the Opawica River. The Opawica River eventually joins the Chibougamau River. This meeting point forms the start of the Waswanipi River. The Waswanipi River flows west through several lakes, including Lake Waswanipi, Goéland Lake, and Olga Lake. It then flows into Lake Matagami. From Matagami Lake, the water goes into the Nottaway River, which finally reaches Rupert Bay in James Bay.
The mouth of the Titipiti River at Feuquières Lake is:
- 9.2 kilometres (5.7 mi) south-east of the mouth of Feuquières Lake.
- 13.3 kilometres (8.3 mi) south of the mouth of Robert Lake (Opawica River).
- 24.7 kilometres (15.3 mi) south-east of the mouth of Gabriel Lake (Opawica River tributary).
- 84.4 kilometres (52.4 mi) south-east of downtown Chibougamau.
River's Name
Over time, different groups of Indigenous people lived in this area. These included the Atikamekw, the Algonquin, and the Cree.
The name "Titipiti River" became official on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a government group that names places in Quebec.
