Titulcia is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Community of Madrid in Spain. It's a place with a long and interesting past.
History of Titulcia
Titulcia is thought to have started way back in Roman times. It was built along an old military road that connected important Roman cities like Emerita Augusta and Cesaraugusta (which is now Zaragoza).
When the Arabs arrived in Spain, the town was destroyed. But it later became important again during the Reconquest, a time when Christian kingdoms took back land from the Moors. Around the year 1208, Titulcia was even called Bayonne for a while.
During the Napoleonic Wars, French soldiers saw how important Titulcia's location was. They held onto the town until 1814. After the French were defeated, King Fernando VII insisted that the town get its original name, Titulcia, back.
Sadly, Titulcia was destroyed for the fifth time in its history during the Spanish Civil War. At that time, it was a main base for the Republican army.
