How Tivydale Started
Creating Gillespie County
On December 15, 1847, people asked to create a new county called Gillespie County. In 1848, the Texas government officially formed Gillespie County. It was made from parts of Bexar and Travis counties. Many of the people who signed the request were German immigrants.
Joseph Albert Tivy's Role
Tivydale is named after a man named Joseph Albert Tivy. He was born in Canada and was a very adventurous person. He even served as a Texas Ranger.
Joseph Tivy was an entrepreneur, which means he started businesses. He joined the California Gold Rush to find gold. He also fought in the Civil War. Later, he served in the government in both California and Texas. He even became the mayor of Kerrville.
Tivy bought thousands of acres of land in Gillespie County in 1847 and 1848. Between 1877 and 1885, he sold pieces of this land in the Pedernales River valley. Captain Joseph Tivy passed away in 1892. He is buried on Tivy Mountain near Kerrville with his wife, one sister, and his wife's cat!
Local Entertainment
In the past, the Bunkesville Band was a popular music group in the area. They played German music and entertained the community.
Schützenfest: A Fun Shooting Festival
Tivydale has an active Schützenbund, which is a shooting club. They take part in the yearly Gillespie County Bundes Schützenfest. This is a special festival where people compete in shooting.
The event includes:
- Crowning one or more Schützenkönigs, or "shooting kings."
- A parade through the community.
- A Saengerfest, which is a singing festival.
It sounds like a lot of fun for the community!
