Todoque was a small town located on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. It was part of the Los Llanos de Aridane municipality. Its main areas included Todoque, Los Pasitos, and Todoque de Arriba. Sadly, Todoque was completely destroyed by a volcanic eruption in September 2021. The lava flows from the Cumbre Vieja volcano covered the entire town, leaving almost nothing behind.
What's in a Name?
Todoque became a district of Los Llanos de Aridane. It was known as Tedoque, both by people living there and officially, until the early 1900s. Its name comes from the language of the native people of the Canary Islands, specifically from the word tedote.
It's thought that the native people used tedote to describe a mountain covered with bushes. This was different from a bare mountain, which they called ten or tener. This name likely referred to the volcano in Todoque, which was covered in scrub. Many other place names on the islands, like Tenibucar and Tenerife, also come from this ancient language.
Todoque Through Time
In the late 1400s, the area where Todoque was located was part of an ancient native region called Tihuya. This region stretched from Aridane to the Tamanca mountain. It included areas known today as Tajuya, Todoque, Puerto Naos, La Laguna, and parts of Las Manchas.
In September and October 2021, the town was hit by the Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption. On September 21, the lava flow reached Todoque. Over the next few days, hundreds of buildings were destroyed. This included the church of Saint Pius X, the local health center, and the neighborhood association building.
Schools were also lost, such as the School of Early Childhood Education, Los Campitos Elementary School, and the Todoque Elementary and Infant Education School. By October 10, new lava flows destroyed any buildings that were still standing. This left the town almost completely erased from the map.
