A Look at the Academy's History
The Infantry Academy started a long time ago. It was first called the "Infantry College in Toledo." This happened in the year 1850.
Moving and Reopening the Academy
In 1875, the academy moved back to Toledo. It was placed inside the famous Alcázar of Toledo building. Before this, it had been in Madrid for a short time.
Later, in 1882, the academy closed down. It became part of a new school called the General Military Academy. But this change did not last long. In 1893, the General Military Academy closed. So, the Infantry Academy was opened again in Toledo.
Rebuilding After the Spanish Civil War
During the Spanish Civil War, the Alcázar building was badly damaged. It was almost completely ruined during a long fight known as the Siege of the Alcázar.
Because of this, the Infantry Academy had to move again. It stayed in different places for a while. It was in Zaragoza and also in Guadalajara.
Finally, between 1948 and 1949, the academy returned to Toledo. A brand new building was built for it. This new building was designed by military engineers. It looks like old Spanish buildings, fitting in well with the historic Alcázar across the river.
