Tolsta Chaolais (also known as Tolastadh Chaolais or Tolstadh a' Chaolais) is a small village found on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. It has about forty homes, gathered around a lake called Loch a' Bhaile. The village is about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) from the main A858 road. This road connects the towns of Callanish and Carloway.
Tolsta Chaolais is part of the Uig area. The village has a special building where people of all different faiths can come together to worship.
What's in the Name?
The name Tolsta Chaolais tells us a bit about its history. The first part, Tolsta, comes from an old Norse word. It means "Farm". The second part, Chaolais, comes from Scottish Gaelic. It means "by the Strait". So, the full name means "Farm by the Strait". This shows how both Norse and Gaelic cultures have influenced the area over time.
Tolsta Chaolais in Pictures
In 1979, a well-known photographer named Fay Godwin visited Tolsta Chaolais. She took many pictures of the village as part of a big project. This project was about capturing the beauty of landscapes. It was supported by the Arts Council of Great Britain. One of Fay Godwin's photos of Tolsta Chaolais was later featured in her 1985 book. The book was called Land and showed many rural landscapes.
A Village on Screen
Tolsta Chaolais became a star in 2013! Much of the filming for the popular CBeebies children's television show, Katie Morag, happened right here. The show is about a young girl living on a Scottish island. The village's beautiful scenery made it the perfect setting for Katie Morag's adventures.
