Tomás Bilbao Hospitalet (1890–1954) was a Spanish architect and politician. He was born in the Basque Country. He helped start the Basque Nationalist Action party. After working as a minister, he had to leave Spain. He first went to France and then to Mexico.

Early Life and Education
Tomás Bilbao was born in Bilbao, Spain, on September 18, 1890. His father worked as a building contractor. Tomás studied hard and earned a degree in architecture in 1918. He graduated from the School of Architecture in Madrid.
Career Highlights
After finishing his studies, Tomás Bilbao started working as an architect. In 1929, he designed a building for Altos Hornos de Vizcaya. Like many architects of his time, he was inspired by German expressionism. This style used strong shapes and emotions in buildings. He also liked the ideas of architect Erich Mendelsohn.
Entering Politics
Tomás Bilbao also became very involved in politics. In 1930, he helped create the Basque Nationalist Action party. This party focused on the interests of the Basque region. In 1931, he became the president of the Bilbao Municipal Housing Board. This role meant he helped manage housing in the city.
He also served as a councillor and deputy mayor for the Bilbao City Council. This was during the time of the Second Spanish Republic. From 1937 to 1938, he held a very important job. He was the Minister of Justice for Spain.
Life in Exile and Family
After his time as a minister, Tomás Bilbao had to leave Spain. He first went to France. But in May 1942, France was invaded by Nazi forces. Because of this, he moved again. He settled in Mexico.
In Mexico, he worked for a company called Compañía Mexicana de Comercio Exterior. Tomás Bilbao was married to Julia Durán. They had seven children together. His family faced many challenges because he had to leave Spain.
Tomás Bilbao passed away in Mexico City on March 16, 1954.
Family Legacy
One of his grandchildren is Tatiana Bilbao. She is a very famous architect in Mexico today. She continues the family's connection to architecture.
