Altos Hornos de Vizcaya, S.A. was a very important Spanish company. It made metal products, especially steel. For much of the 20th century, it was the biggest company in Spain. At its busiest, about 40,000 people worked there!
The company started in 1902 in Bilbao, Spain. It was formed when three other iron and steel businesses joined together. These were Altos Hornos de Bilbao, La Vizcaya, and La Iberia. Later, in the 1990s, Altos Hornos de Vizcaya became part of a larger company called Arcelor.

Why Bilbao Was the Perfect Place
The company chose Bilbao for several good reasons:
- There was a lot of iron ore nearby. Iron ore is the rock from which iron is taken.
- Bilbao has a sea port. This made it easy to bring in materials and send out products.
- The area already had a long history of making metal. People knew how to work with iron and steel.
How the Company Helped the Region
After the Spanish Civil War, the factories in the Basque Country were still working well. This was important because many people from the countryside were looking for jobs. They moved to cities, a time known as the "rural exodus."
Altos Hornos de Vizcaya offered many jobs. It helped several towns in the Biscay area grow and become more developed. These towns included Barakaldo, Sestao, Portugalete, Ortuella, and Abanto y Ciérvana.
Joining Other Companies
In December 1994, Altos Hornos de Vizcaya joined with another company called Ensidesa. They formed a new group called CSI Group. This group was later reorganized in 1997 and became the Aceralia Iron and Steel Corporation. Eventually, Aceralia became part of Arcelor, a very large steel company.
