Serving in the Ohio House
In 1986, Tom Roberts was chosen by other Democratic lawmakers to fill a vacant seat in the Ohio House of Representatives. This happened after Ed Orlett resigned. Roberts then won elections for this position in November 1986, 1988, and 1990.
In 1992, Roberts ran for re-election and faced a challenge from Ed Orlett, the person he had replaced. Roberts won the primary election, which is when party members choose their candidate. He was then re-elected in 1994 and 1996.
Moving to the State Senate
By 1998, rules called term limits meant that Roberts could not run for another term in the Ohio House in 2000. His former assistant, Fred Strahorn, took over his seat. Roberts then tried to become a Montgomery County Commissioner, but he did not win that election.
In 2001, Rhine McLin won the election to become Mayor of Dayton, Ohio. This left her state Senate seat empty. Tom Roberts was then appointed to finish her term. He later won his own full term in the Senate in 2002. He was re-elected in 2006 and served as an assistant leader for the minority party in the 127th General Assembly.
Ohio Civil Rights Commission
By 2009, Tom Roberts could not run for his Senate seat again due to term limits. Ohio Governor Ted Strickland then appointed Roberts to the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. This meant Roberts had to leave his Senate seat. Fred Strahorn once again replaced him.
Leading the NAACP in Ohio
On September 9, 2017, Tom Roberts was elected as the President of the Ohio Conference NAACP. The NAACP is a very important organization that works for civil rights and equality. On September 14, 2019, Roberts was re-elected as President of the Ohio Conference NAACP. He won with 87.30% of the votes.
On September 11, 2021, Roberts was re-elected for a third time as President of the Ohio Conference NAACP. He received 55% of the votes.
