Frederick W. Strahorn (born March 20, 1965) is an American politician from the Democratic Party. He served in the Ohio House of Representatives, which is like a group of lawmakers for the state of Ohio. He represented the 39th District, covering a large part of Dayton, Ohio. He was also the Minority Leader for the Democrats in the Ohio House for several years.
Fred Strahorn's Life and Career
Fred Strahorn has had an interesting career in public service. Before becoming a lawmaker, he was a member of the Board of Trustees for Wright State University. He studied aviation management at Ohio State University and also took real estate courses at Sinclair Community College.
He first became a member of the Ohio House of Representatives in 2000 and was re-elected three times. After serving for a certain number of years, he could not run for that same district again due to term limits. This rule means a politician can only serve for a set amount of time in one position.
In 2008, Fred Strahorn received an important award from the Dayton Unit NAACP. This award, called the President's Award, was given to him by civil rights activist Derrick L. Foward, who was the president of the Dayton NAACP.
The next year, Strahorn was chosen to join the Ohio Senate. He took the place of Tom Roberts, who had moved to another position. However, when he ran for a full term in the Senate, he lost to Bill Beagle from the Republican Party.
Returning to the Ohio House
In 2012, Fred Strahorn was chosen by the Democratic Party to run for the Ohio House of Representatives again, but in a different district. He won this election by a large number of votes, getting over 80% of them. This district was known for usually voting for Democratic candidates. He was running to fill a spot that became open in January 2013.
He won re-election easily in 2014, getting more than 75% of the votes.
On November 18, 2014, Fred Strahorn was chosen by the Democratic lawmakers to be their Minority Leader in the Ohio House. This means he was the main leader for the Democratic Party in the House. He said he wanted to help people understand what the Democratic Party stands for. He was chosen for this leadership role again in 2016.
Around 2016, Strahorn gave a powerful speech about labor rights. He spoke out against actions that try to stop workers from forming a union at the Fuyao Glass America plant in Moraine, Ohio. He praised workers who chose to join the UAW union. His speech was even shown in a 2019 documentary film called American Factory.
