His first professional club was Bangor F.C. in Northern Ireland. After that, he moved to England. He played for Leeds United F.C. for a short time. Then he joined A.F.C. Bournemouth, where he played 66 games.
One of his most important teams was Newcastle United F.C.. He played 116 games for them between 1952 and 1958. He even scored 8 goals during his time there. After Newcastle, he played for Portsmouth F.C. and Bristol City F.C.. He played 122 games for Bristol City, scoring 9 goals.
Later in his career, in 1965, Tommy played abroad for Toronto Inter-Roma in Canada. This was part of the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League. He also played for Gloucester City A.F.C. and Ammanford A.F.C. before ending his playing days.
