Tommy Gemmell's Football Career
Playing for Celtic
In October 1961, Tommy Gemmell joined Celtic from Coltness United. He signed his youth contract on the same day as Jimmy Johnstone. Jimmy also became a famous player for Celtic.
Tommy was one of the "Lisbon Lions". This was the nickname for the Celtic team that won the 1967 European Cup Final against Inter Milan. In that final, Gemmell scored a goal from outside the penalty box to tie the game. He also scored in the 1970 European Cup Final, but Celtic lost that game to Feyenoord. This made him one of only three British players to score in two different European Cup Finals. The others are Phil Neal and Gareth Bale.
Gemmell played 418 games for Celtic and scored 63 goals. He scored 34 goals from 37 penalty kicks. In 1967, he was ranked sixth for the Ballon d'Or award, which is given to the best football player in Europe.
Later Club Career
In December 1971, Gemmell moved to Nottingham Forest. At the end of that season, his team was moved down to a lower league.
In 1973, he played for a short time with the Miami Toros in the North American Soccer League. He then returned to Scotland and joined Dundee in July 1973. With Dundee, he won the 1973 Scottish League Cup Final against his old team, Celtic. He stopped playing football in 1977.
Playing for Scotland
Tommy Gemmell played his first international game for Scotland against England on April 2, 1966. The next year, on April 15, he played in a famous game where Scotland beat the World Champions England 3-2 at Wembley Stadium. This win ended England's streak of 19 games without a loss.
He played 18 games for Scotland and scored one goal. This goal was from a penalty kick against Cyprus in an 8-0 win. His last game for Scotland was in 1971.
Coaching and Later Life
Becoming a Manager
After he stopped playing, Gemmell became the manager for Dundee. He managed the team from June 1, 1977, to April 15, 1980. While managing Dundee, he signed his former Celtic teammate, Jimmy Johnstone.
Gemmell also managed Albion Rovers two times. First from 1986 to 1987, and then again from 1993 to 1994.
Later Years and Passing
In 1994, Gemmell sold his collection of Celtic medals. They were bought by a businessman named Willie Haughey. Willie then loaned the medals back to Celtic so they could be shown in the club's museum. In 2006, Tommy Gemmell was added to the Scottish Football Hall of Fame.
Tommy Gemmell passed away on March 2, 2017, at the age of 73, after being ill for a long time. His funeral was held on March 10. A procession started from Celtic Park, and many former teammates and football figures attended.
