Thomas Edward Tynan (born 17 November 1955) is a retired English professional footballer. He was a talented striker known for scoring many goals.

Who is Tommy Tynan?

Tommy Tynan was a hard-working striker with blonde hair. He was born in Liverpool, England. He became a very popular player, especially for Plymouth Argyle.

Early Football Steps

Tommy started his football journey at Liverpool. He was signed by famous manager Bill Shankly. This happened after Tommy won a talent contest! Even though he didn't play for Liverpool's main team, he soon moved on. In 1976, he joined Sheffield Wednesday. He played there for two years and scored 31 goals.

Success at Newport County

After a short time at Lincoln City in 1978, Tommy moved to Newport County. Here, he became a key player. He formed a strong attacking team with John Aldridge.

Together, they helped Newport County achieve great things. The team won promotion to the Football League Third Division. They also won the Welsh Cup in 1980.

European Adventure

The next season, Newport County played in the European Cup Winners' Cup. This was a big achievement for the club! They reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

Tommy Tynan scored both goals in an away game against Carl Zeiss Jena. One of his goals was in the very last minute! In total, Tommy scored 66 goals in 183 matches for Newport County. This was a very successful time for the club.

Becoming a Plymouth Argyle Legend

In 1983, Tommy Tynan joined Plymouth Argyle. He quickly became a fan favorite. Many Argyle fans still say he is one of their best players ever!

FA Cup Heroics

In 1984, Tommy was part of the team that reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. This is a huge competition in English football. He scored the goal that helped Argyle beat West Bromwich Albion. West Bromwich Albion was a top team at the time.

Argyle then beat Derby County in the quarter-finals. They eventually lost to Watford in the semi-final match.

Top Scorer

In the 1984/85 season, Tommy Tynan was one of the top scorers in the entire Football League. He scored 31 goals that season. This was a fantastic achievement!

Tommy left Plymouth for a short time to play for Rotherham United. But he soon returned to Argyle in 1986. He helped the club push for promotion. His amazing goal-scoring continued. He scored 126 goals in 262 games for Plymouth. Former England manager Graham Taylor called him one of the best natural goal scorers he had ever seen.

After Football

After his playing career, Tommy Tynan spent some time as a manager. He managed Goole Town between 1993 and 1994. Later, he worked as a taxi driver in Plymouth. He also used to write a column about Plymouth Argyle for a local newspaper.
