Toney Bernard Douglas (born March 16, 1986) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for FC Porto in Portugal. Toney started his college basketball journey at Auburn University. He played as a shooting guard there. Later, he moved to Florida State University. There, he changed his position to point guard, which he preferred.
At Florida State, Toney became known for his strong defense. He even set records for stealing the ball from opponents. In his last year, he was a key leader for his team. He helped Florida State reach the NCAA tournament for the first time in 11 years.
Toney was chosen by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2009 NBA draft. He was the 29th player picked overall. However, he was immediately traded to the New York Knicks. He played for several NBA teams, including the Knicks, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, and Golden State Warriors. In 2014, he was traded to the Miami Heat. After playing in China for a season, he returned to the NBA in 2015 with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Early Life and High School Basketball
Toney Douglas was born in Tampa, Florida. He later moved to Jonesboro, Georgia with his parents. He went to Jonesboro High School. Toney was a starter on the basketball team for three years. His brother, Harry Douglas, also played on the team.
High School Achievements
In his second year (2001–02), Toney averaged 21.5 points per game. He also got 6.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He was the first sophomore to earn top honors in his region and state. In his junior year, Toney averaged 28.5 points per game. He scored 20 points or more in 24 games. He was named the Georgia Class 5A Player of the Year. He helped his team reach the state championship game.
As a senior, Toney averaged 34 points per game. His team made it to the state semifinals. He left Jonesboro High as the top scorer in Clayton County, with 2,404 points. He was also named a Parade All-American. He was even nominated for the McDonald's All-American Game. Experts saw him as a top player.
College Basketball Journey
Playing for Auburn University
Toney decided to play for Auburn University during his junior year of high school. In his first year (2004–05), he was the starting shooting guard. He led the team in scoring, with 16.9 points per game. He scored a career-high 38 points against Nicholls State. Toney was one of the best-scoring freshmen in the country. He was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team.
Why Toney Transferred Colleges
After his first year at Auburn, Toney thought about joining the NBA draft. But he didn't hire an agent, so he could still play college basketball. Even though he did well at Auburn, Toney and his family were not happy with his role. Toney wanted to play as a point guard, which he felt was his natural position. He believed this was the position he would play in the NBA.
Auburn's coach did not agree to his request. So, Toney asked to transfer to another university. The coach allowed him to leave, but only if he went to a school outside the SEC. On June 29, 2005, Toney joined Florida State University. The coach there, Leonard Hamilton, let him play point guard. NCAA rules meant Toney had to sit out one season. He started playing for Florida State in the 2006–07 season.
Success at Florida State
Sophomore Year Highlights
Toney had some challenges at first as a point guard at Florida State. But he still played well in other ways. Early in his second year, he made a key shot block. This helped his team win against the fourth-ranked University of Florida Gators. In another game, he scored 10 points in a row against Wake Forest, leading Florida State to a win.
On February 7, 2007, Toney hurt his right hand. He had to miss six games. When he returned, he scored 13 points against the University of Miami. He even made a three-pointer that tied the game and forced overtime. Florida State won that game. Toney finished the season averaging 12.7 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game.
Junior Year Defensive Power
In his junior year, Toney continued to grow as a point guard. He created scoring chances for his teammates and scored himself. His defense got much better. He averaged 2.6 steals per game, the highest in the ACC. He had 48 steals in 16 games against ACC teams, which was one of the highest in league history. In a game against the University of Virginia, Toney's steal in the last minute helped Florida State win.
After the regular season, Toney was chosen for the ACC All-Defensive Team. He was also named to the All-ACC Third Team. He finished the season with 90 steals. He led his team in scoring (15.4 points per game), steals (2.6 per game), and assists (2.6 per game).
Senior Year Leadership
The 2008–09 Florida State team had many new players. Toney, as a senior, became a very important leader. He started all 35 games that season. Toney was the main scorer for his team in 23 games. His scoring average jumped to 21.5 points per game, the highest in the ACC. He also averaged 2.9 assists and 3.9 rebounds.
He earned ACC All-Defensive Team honors again. He was also selected to the All-ACC First Team. Toney was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. He also received many votes for ACC Player of the Year. The Associated Press named him to their All-America Third Team. Toney played very well in the ACC tournament. His team upset top-ranked North Carolina. They reached their first ACC final. Toney was chosen for the ACC All-Tournament team.
Florida State made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 11 years. They played against the University of Wisconsin. Toney scored 26 points. But he missed an important three-point shot late in the game. Wisconsin won 61–59 in overtime. This ended Toney's college career.
Professional Basketball Career
Playing for the New York Knicks (2009–2012)
Before the 2009 NBA draft, Toney worked out with ten teams. On June 25, 2009, the Los Angeles Lakers picked Toney with the 29th overall pick. He was the first guard from Florida State to be drafted in the first round since 1995. Later that night, the New York Knicks traded for Toney. He signed with the Knicks on July 9, 2009.
During the 2009–10 season, Toney was a reserve guard. He scored a career-high 30 points against the Chicago Bulls on November 4, 2010. On March 17, 2011, Toney tied a Knicks record. He made nine three-pointers in a home win against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Moving to the Houston Rockets (2012–2013)
On July 11, 2012, Toney was traded to the Houston Rockets. This trade involved several players and draft picks. His best game as a Rocket was on December 4, 2012. He scored a season-high 22 points against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Time with the Sacramento Kings (2013)
On February 20, 2013, Toney was traded again. He went to the Sacramento Kings as part of a three-team deal.
Joining the Golden State Warriors (2013–2014)
On July 18, 2013, Toney signed with the Golden State Warriors. He played in 24 games for them. He averaged 11 minutes per game. He had a limited role coming off the bench.
Playing for the Miami Heat (2014)
On January 15, 2014, Toney was traded to the Miami Heat. This was another three-team trade. The Heat reached the NBA Finals in 2014. However, they lost the series to the San Antonio Spurs.
Playing in China (2014–2015)
On August 19, 2014, Toney signed a one-year deal. He joined the Jiangsu Dragons in the Chinese Basketball Association. On February 1, 2015, he left the team after the regular season ended. He played in 35 games. He averaged 19.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.1 steals per game.
Return to the NBA with New Orleans (2015–2016)
On February 4, 2015, Toney signed a 10-day contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. He signed a second 10-day contract. But he was waived the next day. He returned to the Pelicans on March 24. He signed with them for the rest of the season. On July 31, he was waived again.
On August 11, 2015, Toney signed with the Indiana Pacers. However, he was waived by the Pacers in October. Four days later, he re-signed with the Pelicans. On March 31, 2016, he scored 20 points. He also had a season-high 10 assists in a win against the Denver Nuggets. On July 12, 2016, he was waived by the Pelicans again.
Short Stint with Memphis (2016–2017)
On October 3, 2016, Toney signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. But he was waived by them on October 15. On December 5, 2016, he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. He helped the team because they had many injured players. He played in six games for the Grizzlies. He was waived on December 15. He signed two more 10-day contracts with the Grizzlies in early 2017. Then he signed a contract for the rest of the season. On March 18, 2017, Toney was waived by the Grizzlies again.
Playing in Turkey (2017–2019)
Anadolu Efes (2017–2018)
On December 29, 2017, Toney signed with the Turkish club Anadolu Efes. He played for the rest of the 2017–18 season. Toney helped Anadolu Efes win the 2018 Turkish Cup.
Sakarya (2018)
On August 6, 2018, Toney signed with Sakarya BB in Turkey. In 15 games, Toney averaged 15.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 2.3 steals per game.
Darüşşafaka (2018–2019)
On December 5, 2018, Toney left Sakarya. He then signed with Darüşşafaka for the rest of the season.
Playing in Spain and Italy (2019–2021)
On November 26, 2019, Toney signed with Movistar Estudiantes in Spain. On February 21, 2020, he left the team.
On March 2, 2020, Toney signed with Varese in Italy. He played 26 games during the 2020–2021 season. He averaged 14.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
Playing in Greece (2021–2022)
On August 21, 2021, Toney signed with the Greek club Iraklis Thessaloniki. In 18 games, he averaged 16 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2 steals. He played about 32 minutes per game.

On January 22, 2022, Toney signed with the Israeli club Hapoel Eilat. He played there for the rest of the season.

Personal Life
Toney's brother, Harry Douglas, was a wide receiver. He played for the Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans in the National Football League (NFL). In 2009, Toney and Harry became one of only six pairs of brothers to play in both the NBA and NFL.
