James Elbert Robbins (born June 2, 1958 – died August 2, 2020) was an American football player. He played as an offensive lineman in the National Football League (NFL). His career lasted from 1982 to 1993.
Early Life and College Football
James Robbins grew up in North Carolina. He went to Bertie High School in Windsor, North Carolina. After high school, he played college football at East Carolina.
He was a very good player in college. In 1981, the Associated Press (AP) named him a top player. He was on their first-team All-South Independent football team. He also earned second-team honors on the 1981 All-America team.
NFL Career Highlights
The St. Louis Cardinals picked Robbins in the fourth round of the 1982 NFL Draft. He played as a right tackle for the team. He stayed with the team from 1982 to 1991. The team moved to Phoenix in 1988 and became the Phoenix Cardinals.
During his time with the Cardinals, Robbins started 122 games. He even started 32 games in a row, showing how reliable he was.
In January 1992, Robbins joined the Green Bay Packers. The Packers traded for him, giving up a future draft pick. He played for the Packers for two seasons. He started 26 games for them in 1992 and 1993.
Before the 1994 season, Robbins decided to retire. He was 36 years old at the time.
Later Life and Passing
James Robbins passed away on August 2, 2020. He was 62 years old. He died in Chandler, Arizona. His death was due to health issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
