The Story of Mary Poppins Returns
The story is set in London during the Great Depression. This was a time when many people had financial difficulties. Michael Banks lives in his childhood home with his three children: John, Annabel, and Georgie. His wife, Kate, passed away a year earlier.
Michael has borrowed money from his employer, the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank. He is behind on his payments. Mr. Wilkins, the bank's new chairman, warns Michael. He says the house will be taken by Friday if the loan is not paid. Michael and his sister Jane remember that their father left them shares in the bank. These shares should cover the loan. They start searching the house for the share certificate. During the search, Michael finds his old kite and throws it away.
Mary Poppins Arrives
The children go to a local park. Georgie finds the kite and flies it. Suddenly, Mary Poppins floats down from the sky, holding the kite. She takes the children home. Mary Poppins announces that she will be their new nanny. She gives the children a magical bath, leading to amazing underwater adventures. This is shown in the song "Can You Imagine That?".
Michael goes to the bank to find proof of his shares. But Mr. Wilkins says there are no records. He secretly destroys the page from the official ledger. Annabel and John decide to sell their mother's valuable bowl to pay the debt. Georgie tries to stop them. The bowl gets damaged while they argue.
Jack, a friendly lamplighter, greets Mary Poppins. He joins her and the children on a trip into the scene painted on the bowl. They visit the Royal Doulton Music Hall. Georgie is taken by talking animal characters: a wolf, a weasel, and a badger. These animals are taking people's belongings. Annabel and John bravely rescue Georgie. They fall off the edge of the bowl and wake up in their beds. Mary Poppins sings them a lullaby called "The Place Where Lost Things Go". This helps them feel better after losing their mother.
Solving the Problem
The children visit Mary Poppins's cousin, Topsy. They hope to get the bowl fixed. They learn that the bowl is not worth much money. This is shown in the song "Turning Turtle". They take Michael his briefcase at the bank. There, they overhear Mr. Wilkins planning to take their house. Georgie thinks Wilkins and his helpers are the same animal gang who took him. He interrupts the meeting. Michael gets upset with the children for risking his house and job.
Mary Poppins takes the children home. Jack and his fellow lamplighters guide them. They teach the children their rhyming slang in the song "Trip A Little Light Fantastic". The children comfort a sad Michael, and they all make up.
As Friday midnight gets closer, the Banks family gets ready to move out. Michael looks at his old kite. He discovers that Georgie used the missing share certificate to mend it! Jane and Michael rush to the bank. Mary Poppins and the children go with Jack and the lamplighters to Big Ben. They plan to "turn back time." They climb the clock tower and turn the clock back five minutes. This gives Jane and Michael just enough time to reach the bank.
However, Mr. Wilkins won't accept the certificate because a piece is missing. Then, Wilkins's elderly uncle, Mr. Dawes Jr., arrives. He is the bank's previous chairman. He immediately fires Wilkins for his dishonest actions. Mr. Dawes Jr. reveals that Michael has plenty of money to cover the loan. This money came from a small deposit, a tuppence, Michael made with the bank many years earlier.
The next day, the Banks family visits the park. A fair is happening. They buy balloons that carry them into the air. Jack and many others join them in the sky. This is shown in the song "Nowhere to Go but Up". When they return home, Mary Poppins says it's time for her to leave. Jane and Michael thank her. Her umbrella carries her back up into the sky and away.
