David Hattersley Warner (born July 29, 1941 – died July 24, 2022) was a famous English actor. He worked in movies, TV shows, and on stage. David Warner went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to learn acting.
He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1962. There, he played important roles like King Henry VI. He also played Prince Hamlet in a famous 1965 play. Warner became well-known in movies with his role in Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment in 1966.
David Warner often played interesting characters. These included villains and kind people. He appeared in many science fiction, fantasy, and historical dramas. Some of his famous roles were in The Omen, Time After Time (as Jack the Ripper), and Titanic. He also played different characters in the Star Trek series. In 1981, he won an Emmy Award for his role in the TV show Masada.

Early Years
David Warner was born on July 29, 1941, in Manchester, England. His mother was Ada Doreen Hattersley, and his father was Herbert Simon Warner. His father owned a nursing home. David's parents were not married when he was born. He often moved between his parents' homes. Later, he lived with his Russian Jewish father and his stepmother. He finished his studies at RADA in 1961.
Acting Career Highlights
On Stage
David Warner started his acting career on stage in January 1962. His first role was Snout in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. This play was shown at the Royal Court Theatre in London. In March 1962, he acted in Much Ado About Nothing in Coventry.
He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1963. He played Trinculo in The Tempest and Cinna the Poet in Julius Caesar. He also played Henry VI in The Wars of the Roses trilogy. In 1965, he played the main role in Hamlet for the RSC. This play later moved to the Aldwych Theatre in London.
After a long break, Warner returned to the stage in 2001. He played Andrew Undershaft in Major Barbara on Broadway. In 2005, he played King Lear at the Chichester Festival Theatre. In 2007, he returned to Stratford to play Sir John Falstaff. This was for the RSC's Henry IV, Part 1 and Henry IV, Part 2. He is one of the few actors to play Hamlet, Lear, and Falstaff.
In Movies and TV Shows
David Warner's first movie role was in 1963. He played the villain Blifil in Tom Jones. In 1965, he starred as King Henry VI in the BBC TV version of The Wars of the Roses. He also appeared with Bob Dylan in the 1963 play Madhouse on Castle Street. His role in Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment (1966) made him famous.
He often played bad guys in movies. These included The Thirty Nine Steps (1978) and Time After Time (1979). He was also in Time Bandits (1981) and Tron (1982). In animated TV shows, he voiced Ra's al Ghul in Batman: The Animated Series. He also voiced the Archmage in Disney's Gargoyles.
Warner also played good characters. He was Bob Cratchit in the 1984 TV movie A Christmas Carol. In 1981, he won an Emmy Award for his role in Masada. He appeared in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. He was also in Titanic (1997) and Scream 2.
In 2013, he played Professor Grisenko in the Doctor Who episode "Cold War". He also appeared in Penny Dreadful as Abraham Van Helsing.

David Warner was a talented voice actor. He narrated Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin. He also voiced characters in video games. These included Jon Irenicus in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. He was also Morpheus in Fallout.
He did voice work for animated TV shows like Toonsylvania and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Warner also performed in many audio plays. He played an alternative version of the Doctor in Doctor Who Unbound. He also played Steel in plays based on Sapphire & Steel.
Personal Life
David Warner was married two times. His first marriage was to Harriet Lindgren in 1969. They divorced in 1972. He then married Sheilah Kent in 1979. They divorced in 2005.
Warner had a son named Luke. Luke shared that his father supported his journey to become a man. David Warner also quietly gave money to groups that help LGBTQ people.
Later Years and Passing
David Warner had been diagnosed with cancer about 18 months before his death. He kept this private from the public. He passed away from a lung cancer-related illness. This happened at Denville Hall, London, on July 24, 2022. He was 80 years old.
