The very top of Tor y Foel is 551 meters high. You'll find a small pile of stones, called a cairn, marking the summit. From here, you get amazing views! You can see the River Usk valley, the Black Mountains, and the Brecon Beacons to the west.

Exploring Tor y Foel

How Tor y Foel Was Formed

Tor y Foel is made from special rocks called sandstones and mudstones. These rocks are part of something called the Brownstones Formation. They belong to the Old Red Sandstone group. These rocks were laid down a very long time ago. This happened during the lower Devonian period. That was a time when Earth looked very different!

If you look closely at these rocks, you'll see they gently tilt. They slope towards the southeast. You might also spot some small holes near the top of the hill. People might have dug here to find stone. This stone was probably used to make roof tiles for houses.

Visiting Tor y Foel

The higher parts of Tor y Foel are known as open country. This means that walkers are allowed to explore freely here. You can roam around and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

There's a small public road that runs near the hill. It goes along the western side, starting from Talybont-on-Usk. If you prefer to ride, there's a bridleway. This path starts from Llangynidr and leads to the eastern part of the hill. So, whether you like walking or riding, Tor y Foel is easy to reach!
