Tori Bowie (born Frentorish Bowie on August 27, 1990 – died around May 2, 2023) was an amazing American track and field athlete. She was best known for competing in the long jump, 100-meter dash, and 200-meter dash. Tori won many medals, including a silver medal in the 100 meters and a bronze medal in the 200 meters at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also earned gold medals as part of the U.S. women's 4 × 100-meter relay teams at both the 2016 Olympics and the 2017 World Championships.

Before becoming a professional athlete, Tori competed for the University of Southern Mississippi. There, she became a two-time NCAA Division I long jump champion in 2011. After the 2014 World Indoor Championships, she decided to focus more on sprinting events.

Tori Bowie's Early Life and College Journey

Growing Up and High School Sports

Tori Bowie was born in Sand Hill, Rankin County, Mississippi. She went to Pisgah High School and started competing in track and field there. As a junior in 2007, Tori won state championships in the 100 meters and the long jump. In her senior year (2008), she won state titles in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and long jump. She also helped her team win three state titles in the 4 × 100-meter relay. Besides track, she also played for her school's women's basketball team.

College Athletics at Southern Miss

Tori earned a special athletic scholarship to attend the University of Southern Mississippi. She studied a mix of psychology and social work. At college, she competed for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles and Lady Eagles in big NCAA Division I competitions.

During her first year, she had her best results in the long jump. She finished third and second at the Conference USA indoor and outdoor meets. She also made it to the NCAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

In her second year, Tori set a personal best of 6.23 m (20 ft 5.15059056 in) in the indoor long jump. She was the runner-up at the Conference USA indoor meet. Outdoors, she placed third in the long jump and reached the 100-meter final. She finished sixth in the long jump at the NCAA outdoor championship. She also competed nationally at the 2010 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing eighth.

Winning College Championships

In 2011, during her junior year, Tori won her first two national college titles. She won the long jump at the Conference USA indoor championship. She also came in second in the triple jump at that event.

Tori then won her first college title in the long jump at the NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships. Her jump of 6.52 m (21 ft 4.56791339 in) was a new school record. Later, she won the NCAA outdoor long jump title with another school record of 6.64 m (21 ft 9.29232284 in). Because of these achievements, she was named the best female athlete of the year for her conference.

In her last year at the University of Southern Mississippi, she won the triple jump at the Conference USA indoor championships. Her jump of 13.09 m (42 ft 11.22933071 in) was a personal best for her. She also took second place in the long jump.

Outdoors, she greatly improved her 100-meter time, going from 11.76 to 11.28 seconds. At the Conference USA outdoor championship, she won the long jump with a new school record of 6.78 m (22 ft 2.80413386 in). She also placed third in the 100 meters, fifth in the triple jump, and seventh in the 4x100 meter relay. In her final big college competition, she tried to win the NCAA outdoor long jump title again but finished second.

Tori Bowie's Professional Track and Field Career

Starting as a Pro Athlete

Tori Bowie began competing as a professional track and field athlete in 2013. This means she competed for prize money and sponsorships, not just for her school. At the 2013 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, she made it to the semi-finals in the 100 meters. She just missed making the long jump team for the 2013 World Championships in Athletics, finishing fourth. She also started competing in the IAAF Diamond League, which is a series of top-level track and field meetings.

Tori continued to get better in 2014. She set new indoor bests of 7.14 seconds for the 60-meter dash and jumped 6.95 m (22 ft 9.49704725 in) in the long jump. After winning at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, she placed second in the long jump at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships. This earned her a spot on the team for the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships. However, she didn't perform as well there and finished 14th.

In June 2014, she set two new personal bests in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the IAAF Diamond League Championship. She won the 100-meter race at the Adidas Grand Prix event in New York with a time of 11.07 seconds. She also ran a very fast 10.91 seconds in the semi-final at the 2014 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

In 2015, Tori won the 100 meters at the 2015 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 10.81 seconds. This win helped her qualify for the 2015 World Championships in Athletics, where she earned a bronze medal in the 100 meters.

Olympic and World Championship Success

Tori placed third in the 100 meters at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials with a time of 10.779 seconds. This secured her spot on the Olympic team.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Tori had an incredible performance. She won the silver medal in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.83 seconds. She then won the bronze medal in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.15 seconds. To top it off, she also won a gold medal as part of the 4 × 100-meter relay team.
