"Torn"

(1997)

"Big Mistake"

(1998)

"Torn" is a super popular song sung by Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia. It was released in 1997 and is from her first album, Left of the Middle. The song became a huge hit all over the world!

Natalie Imbruglia was even nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" because of "Torn." A Grammy is one of the biggest awards in music! She was up against Céline Dion's famous song "My Heart Will Go On," which ended up winning.

The Music Video

The music video for "Torn" was directed by Alison Maclean. It shows Natalie Imbruglia singing the song. There are also scenes of her talking with actor Jeremy Sheffield in what looks like a cozy apartment.

But here's a cool secret about the video: during the last part of the song, the walls of the apartment start to wobble! Then, you see the film crew come in and take the whole set apart. It turns out the "apartment" was just a movie set all along! Natalie starts dancing as her "world" crumbles around her, which looks really neat.

This video was so good that MTV Italy rated it as the second-best music video of all time!

How Well "Torn" Sold

"Torn" was a massive success around the world. The physical CD single sold over 4 million copies! In the UK alone, it sold more than 1 million copies. It's even the 85th best-selling single in UK history.

The song reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and stayed there for three weeks. It was kept from the top spot by Aqua's "Barbie Girl." Because of this, "Torn" is known as the second-biggest selling single in UK history that never actually reached number one.

Years later, in 2007, "Torn" even re-entered the UK charts at number 70. This happened because people started buying it digitally after Natalie Imbruglia released her greatest hits album.

In the Flanders region of Belgium, the song was number one for seven weeks! It stayed on the charts there for 22 weeks.

In Australia, "Torn" holds a special record. As of 2011, it was the most played song on Australian radio since 1990! It had been played over 300,500 times since it came out in 1998.

In the U.S., the song was number one on the Hot 100 Airplay chart for 11 weeks in a row. This chart measures how much a song is played on the radio.

In 2003, Q magazine called "Torn" the number 1 "Best Pop Song" on their list of the "1001 Best Songs Ever." Also, Billboard magazine ranked "Torn" as the 26th "Best Pop Song" based on pop radio charts from 1992 to 2012. These awards show just how much people loved and still love this song!
