Torrey Pines is a neighborhood in the northern part of San Diego, California. It covers about 2,600 acres (1,052 hectares). This area has many office buildings, especially near Interstate 5.

Torrey Pines is part of a larger business area in San Diego. This area is sometimes called the "North City edge city." An edge city is a big center for jobs and businesses that is outside the main downtown area. Other parts of this "edge city" include University City (also known as UTC), Sorrento Mesa, Sorrento Valley, Del Mar Heights, and Carmel Valley.

This community is also home to the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course. Many people consider it one of the best public golf courses in the United States. The City of San Diego has hosted major golf tournaments here, like the 2008 US Open and the 2021 US Open. The Farmers Insurance Open, a PGA Tour event, also happens at Torrey Pines every year.

Where is Torrey Pines?

Torrey Pines is located right by the ocean. To the north, it borders the city of Del Mar. To the south, you'll find La Jolla. On the east side, it's next to Interstate 5, Carmel Valley, Torrey Hills, the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Reserve, and Mira Mesa. To the west, it meets La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean near Torrey Pines State Beach and Torrey Pines State Park.

A big part of Torrey Pines is made up of parks and open spaces. About 42 percent of the community is green areas. Homes make up 24 percent of the land. The rest is used for transportation, businesses, and schools.

Two neighborhoods within Torrey Pines are Del Mar Terraces and Del Mar Heights.

Who Lives in Torrey Pines?

In January 2013, about 6,652 people lived in Torrey Pines. There were 2,889 households, which means about 2,889 families or groups of people living together.

Most of the people living here were White (81.5%). There were also people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent (8.6%), Hispanic (5.7%), and other races. The average age of people in Torrey Pines was about 46.6 years old. About 20.4% of the people were under 18 years old, and 21.7% were 65 years or older.

Learning and Schools

The Del Mar Union School District serves the children in the Del Mar Heights neighborhood. There are two elementary schools in this area: Del Mar Hills Academy and Del Mar Heights Elementary.
