Towaoc is a special kind of community in Colorado, United States. It's called a Census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a place with people living there, but it's not officially a city or town. Towaoc is the main town for the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. It is located on their reservation in Montezuma County. Towaoc also has its own post office with the ZIP Code 81334. In 2020, about 1,120 people lived in Towaoc.

Exploring Towaoc's Location

Towaoc is found in a very interesting part of Colorado. It sits to the east of a special mountain called Sleeping Ute Mountain. This mountain is very important to the Ute people. It is considered a sacred place for them.

Towaoc is also northeast of the Four Corners Monument. This monument is a unique spot. It is the only place in the United States where four states meet. These states are Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Old Towaoc and New Developments

The older part of Towaoc, often called Old Towaoc, is at the base of Ute Mountain. It is about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of two main highways, US 491 and US 160. This area has many important buildings. These include offices for the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. It also has buildings for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).

More recently, a new area has grown right next to the highways. This new complex is at the spot where the road to Old Towaoc begins. The entire Towaoc CDP covers an area of about 9.284 square kilometers (3.585 sq mi). All of this area is land.

Students living in Towaoc attend schools managed by the Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1. This school district serves the community and helps young people learn and grow.

Towaoc's Population and Languages

The population of Towaoc has changed over the years. In 1990, about 700 people lived there. By 2000, the number grew to 1,097. In 2010, it was 1,087 people. The most recent count in 2020 showed 1,120 people living in Towaoc.
