History
A Look Back at Towner's Past
Towner used to be known as "Memphis." It was a popular spot for people from Kansas when their state had "dry counties." This meant that in Kansas, it was illegal to sell alcohol in those areas. Towner is the town farthest east in Colorado, located less than 2 miles (3.2 km) from the Kansas border.
Life in Towner Today
The community currently has two large buildings called grain elevators. These are used to store grain from local farms. The number of people in Towner grows a lot during harvest season. This is because many farm workers come to help, and they often camp in the town.
Students from Towner go to Plainview School. This school is located near Sheridan Lake. It teaches students from pre-kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.
Wildlife and Outdoor Activities
The area around Towner is great for hunting. You can often find deer, pronghorn (a type of antelope), and pheasant there. Sometimes, people even spot an elk!
A Sad Event in Towner's History
In 1931, a sad event happened near Towner. Five students and their bus driver died in a bus accident, known as the Pleasant Hill bus tragedy.

Towner is in the eastern part of Kiowa County. Colorado State Highway 96 runs right through the community. If you need to get gas, the closest station is about 11 miles (18 km) west on Highway 96, in the town of Sheridan Lake, Colorado.
Border with Kansas
The border with Kansas is only 2 miles (3.2 km) to the east of Towner. The town of Tribune, Kansas, is about 18 miles (29 km) east of Towner if you follow Kansas State Highway 96.
