A Look at History
For a long time, Towthorpe was part of the North Riding of Yorkshire. This was a historic area in England.
In 1974, things changed. Towthorpe became part of a new district called Ryedale. This district was still in North Yorkshire.
Then, in 1996, Towthorpe joined the City of York area. This is a special type of local government.
Towthorpe used to be its own small administrative area, called a township. In 1866, it became a separate civil parish. However, on April 1, 2009, its parish joined with Strensall. They formed the new "Strensall with Towthorpe" parish.
Military Presence
To the north-east of Towthorpe, there is a military area. This includes part of the Strensall training area. There are also nearby buildings called Queen Elizabeth Barracks.
This training area used to be known as Strensall and Towthorpe Common. It is a place where the military practices.
