Toyo Province (豊国, Toyo-no kuni) was a very old part of Japan. It was like a large region or state long ago. This ancient area is now part of Ōita Prefecture and the northeastern part of Fukuoka Prefecture.

Toyo Province was located in the area that later became Buzen Province and Bungo Province. In the year 683, Toyo Province was officially split into these two smaller provinces. Sometimes, people also called it Hōshū (豊州).

The story of Toyo Province began and ended before the early 700s. This was before a very important set of laws called the Taihō Code was created in Japan. The Taihō Code helped organize the government and how provinces were run. So, Toyo Province existed even before these big changes happened.

We learn about Toyo Province from old Japanese history books. One of the most famous is called the Nihongi. This book is like a detailed record of ancient Japan. According to the Nihongi, a group of people known as the Aka clan settled in Toyo Province. This happened during the time when Emperor Ankan was the ruler of Japan.
