Trương Thị Mai (born January 23, 1958) is an important politician from Vietnam. She made history by becoming the first woman to hold very high positions in the Communist Party of Vietnam. These roles included being the Permanent Member of the Secretariat and the Head of the Central Organization Commission.
She was a member of the Politburo and the Secretariat. These are the country's most important decision-making groups. She was considered one of the most powerful women in Vietnamese politics.
Trương Thị Mai has been a member of the Party Central Committee since 2006. She also led the Party's Mass Mobilisation Commission. For many years, she was a member of the National Assembly of Vietnam, starting in 1997. She also led the Parliamentary Committee for Social Affairs. She was also the President of the Vietnam–Cuba Friendship Association.
Before working in national politics, Mai was the President of the Vietnam Youth Federation. She was the first woman to hold this position. She also held a key role in the Central Committee's Secretariat of the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union.
She studied history and law, earning a Bachelor of History and a Bachelor of Laws. She also earned a Master's degree in Public Administration. She has an advanced degree in Political Theory.

Early Life and Education
Trương Thị Mai was born on January 23, 1958, in Quảng Bình Province, Vietnam. When she was young, her family moved to Da Lat, Lâm Đồng. She grew up there and studied History at Dalat University. She earned her Bachelor of History degree from this university.
She later attended the National Academy of Public Administration in Hanoi. There, she earned a Bachelor of Laws degree. She then continued her studies in Public Administration and received a Master's degree. She officially joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on October 11, 1986. She also took courses at the Hồ Chí Minh National Academy of Politics, where she earned an advanced degree in political theory.
Her Career Journey
Working with Youth
Trương Thị Mai spent many years working with the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union. In 1992, she was elected to the Central Committee's Secretariat of the Youth Union. She continued to be elected to this group in 1997. In the same year, she became the Vice President and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Federation.
In March 1998, she was officially elected President of the Vietnam Youth Federation. She was the first woman to lead this organization. She continued as President until February 2003. From 1992 to December 2002, she worked for the Youth Union Central Committee for 10 years.
Serving in the National Assembly
Trương Thị Mai became a member of the National Assembly of Vietnam in 1997. The National Assembly is like the parliament or congress in other countries. She represented Cà Mau Province and was part of the National Assembly Law Committee. From 2002 to 2007, she represented Trà Vinh Province.
From 2007 to 2011, she represented Bình Phước Province. In May 2007, she was elected to the Standing Committee of the National Assembly. She also became the Chairwoman of the National Assembly Social Affairs Committee. In January 2011, she was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. She continued her roles in the National Assembly.
From 2011 to 2021, she represented Lâm Đồng Province in the National Assembly. In May 2016, she was re-elected with a large number of votes.
Key Roles in the Communist Party
In January 2016, Trương Thị Mai was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The next day, she was elected to the Politburo. This is a very powerful group that makes important decisions for the country. In February 2016, she became a member of the Secretariat and the Head of the Mass Mobilisation Commission of the CPV Central Committee.
In April 2016, she was appointed to a leadership role in the Vietnam Fatherland Front. In May 2017, she became the President of the Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Association.
Leading the Organization Commission
In January 2021, she was re-elected as a full member of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The next day, she was elected a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam. In April 2021, she was appointed Head of the Organization Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. She was the first woman to hold this important position.
Permanent Member of the Secretariat
In March 2023, the 13th Politburo appointed Mai to the post of Permanent Member of the Secretariat. She was the first woman to hold this position. She stepped down from this role in May 2024.
