Discovering Tramell Tillman: An American Actor
Tramell Tillman's Early Life and School Days
Tramell Tillman was born in Washington, D.C., on June 17, 1985. His mother worked for the U.S. federal government, and his father worked for Amtrak, a train company. Tramell is the youngest of five children. He grew up in Largo, Maryland, in a Baptist family.
He went to Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, and finished in 2003. After high school, he first went to Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans. He planned to study medicine to become an orthopedic surgeon, but he soon realized it wasn't what he wanted to do.
In 2005, after Hurricane Katrina caused a lot of damage in New Orleans, Tramell's parents suggested he transfer schools. He moved to Jackson State University and changed his major to mass communications. He graduated in 2008 with highest honors (called summa cum laude), earning a Bachelor of Science degree. Later, in 2014, Tramell achieved another milestone. He became the first African-American man to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting from the University of Tennessee.
Tramell Tillman's Journey in Acting
Tramell Tillman has always loved acting. He says his mother inspired him to start. When he was 10, his mother needed someone to play her character's son in their church's Christmas play. This was Tramell's first acting role, and it helped him overcome his shyness.
Before becoming a professional actor, Tramell worked for over ten years in the nonprofit sector, which means he worked for organizations that help people. He used his experiences from working in offices to help him create his famous character, Seth Milchick, in the science fiction thriller series Severance. He described Milchick as a mix of different co-workers and bosses he had met.
Key Roles and Achievements
Tramell's acting in Severance, especially in the second season, received a lot of praise from critics. In September 2025, he won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. This was a historic moment because he was the first Black person and the first person from the LGBTQ+ community to win this specific award. He was also the first openly gay Black person to be nominated for it.
