The Treaty of Surji-Anjangaon was an important agreement signed on December 30, 1803. It was made between the British and Daulat Rao Sindhia. Sindhia was a powerful leader of the Maratha Confederacy, a group of Indian states. The treaty was signed in a town called Anjangaon in Maharashtra, India.

Why Was This Treaty Signed?

This treaty came after some big battles. These were the Battle of Assaye and the Battle of Argaon. Major General Arthur Wellesley led the British army. His military actions in Central India led to this agreement. This all happened during the first part of the Second Anglo-Maratha War (1803-1805).

What Did the Treaty Change?

Because of this treaty, the British gained control of many areas. These included the Ganges-Jumna Doab region. They also got Haryana and the Delhi-Agra area. Parts of Bundelkhand and Broach also came under their rule. Some districts in Gujarat and the fort of Ahmadnagar were also taken. All these places eventually came under the control of the British East India Company.

How the Treaty Changed Over Time

The Treaty of Surji-Anjangaon was changed two times. The first change happened in November 1805. This change gave back the areas of Gwalior and Gohad to Sindhia. The second change was on November 5, 1817. This time, Sindhia was given more power. In return, he had to help the British. He helped them fight against a group called the Pindaris. This happened during the Third Anglo-Maratha War.
