Tres Cantos is a city in Spain, located in the Community of Madrid. It's a special place because it's one of Spain's newest cities.
It used to be part of a nearby town called Colmenar Viejo. But in 1991, Tres Cantos became its own separate city. This makes it the youngest city in the Madrid region. It was designed in the 1970s to be a "satellite city" for Madrid. This means it was planned to be a modern city near a big one, but with its own identity. In 2020, about 48,326 people lived here.
Tres Cantos has a unique layout, like many planned cities. It's divided into different areas called "phases." There are three main phases and a newer area called "Nuevo Tres Cantos." The first two phases are split into smaller "sectors." Many sectors, especially in the first phase, have walking areas inside them. Streets are usually found around these walking spaces. The names of places often match their sector. For example, the "Sector Océanos" has five streets named after the world's oceans.
Many big companies have their Spanish offices in Tres Cantos. These include Siemens, Danone, and Beiersdorf. Important research is also done here by companies like Merck and GSK. A part of Spain's main science research group, CSIC, is also in Tres Cantos.

The Story of Tres Cantos
How Tres Cantos Began
The idea for Tres Cantos started between 1969 and 1973. A government minister named Vicente Mortes began to plan a new town in a rural area. This was the first version of Tres Cantos. Later, people decided to update the city's design. They took ideas from planned cities in England.
In 1976, a company called "Tres Cantos S.A." was created. This company helped to build the modern city we see today. People started moving into homes in Tres Cantos in 1982.
Becoming Its Own City
A political group wanted Tres Cantos to become an independent city. They got support from some local politicians. So, in 1991, Tres Cantos officially separated from Colmenar Viejo. It became its own municipality (a self-governing town).
The first mayor of Tres Cantos was Antonio Osuna. He had a lot of support from the people. The city has continued to grow. There are plans to expand it to hold up to 60,000 people.
Where is Tres Cantos?
Location and Landscape
Tres Cantos was built on land that used to be farms. It's located about halfway between the edge of Madrid and the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains. These mountains often have snow in winter.
The city sits in a small valley with two creeks. To the south, there's a higher area that leads to Madrid. To the west and north, there are more hills. The city is about 680 meters (2,230 feet) above sea level. The highest point in the city is 730 meters (2,400 feet). The land within the city is gently rolling. There is also a huge new area being built with modern houses. This new part is called the "Third Phase."
Weather in Tres Cantos
Tres Cantos has a typical climate for inland Spain. Summers are warm. Temperatures can reach 33°C (91°F) and sometimes even 39°C (102°F). Nights are cooler, dropping to about 20°C (68°F).
Winters are cold. Temperatures can fall to 0°C (32°F) or below. Daytime temperatures are around 9°C (48°F). Because of its location and closeness to the mountains, Tres Cantos gets more rain than Madrid. It receives over 500 mm (20 inches) of rain each year.
