Joseph Anthony "Trey" Mancini III (born March 18, 1992) is an American professional baseball player. He plays first baseman, outfielder, and designated hitter. He is currently a free agent, meaning he can sign with any team.

Trey has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, and Chicago Cubs. His nickname is "Boomer". The Orioles picked him in the 2013 MLB draft. He first played in the MLB in 2016 with the Orioles.

In early 2020, Trey was diagnosed with colon cancer. He missed the whole baseball season that year while he recovered. After getting better, Trey returned to baseball in 2021. He was given the AL Comeback Player of the Year award for his amazing return. In 2022, he joined the Astros and helped them win the 2022 World Series.

Playing in High School and College

Trey Mancini went to Winter Haven High School in Winter Haven, Florida. In his senior year, he was a great hitter, with a .480 average and six home runs. After high school, he went to the University of Notre Dame. There, he played college baseball for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He also studied political science.

Trey played summer baseball for different teams while in college. In 2013, his junior year, he hit .389 with seven home runs. He also had 54 runs batted in (RBI) in 57 games.

Starting with the Baltimore Orioles

Playing in the Minor Leagues

The Baltimore Orioles chose Trey Mancini in the eighth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. He started his professional career with the Aberdeen IronBirds in 2013. He played well, hitting .328 with three home runs.

In 2014, Trey played for the Delmarva Shorebirds and then the Frederick Keys. He hit ten home runs and had 83 RBI that year. In 2015, he played for Frederick again and then moved up to the Bowie Baysox. He had a fantastic year, hitting .341 with 21 home runs and 89 RBI.

Trey started the 2016 season with Bowie. He was later promoted to the Norfolk Tides. He finished the season there, hitting .280 with 13 home runs.

Making it to the Major Leagues

The Orioles called Trey Mancini up to the major leagues on September 18, 2016. On September 20, in his very first MLB game, he hit a home run! This happened in his second time at bat against the Boston Red Sox. His parents were there to see his first MLB home run.

Trey made history by hitting a home run in his first three starts. This is a very rare achievement in baseball.

In 2017, Trey became a regular player for the Orioles. He had a great start to the season, hitting many home runs early on. On June 7, he hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning. Then, two innings later, he hit a walk-off home run to win the game for the Orioles!

Trey finished his first full MLB season in 2017 hitting .293 with 24 home runs and 78 RBI. He was one of the top players considered for the American League Rookie of the Year.

In 2018, Trey played in 156 games. He ended the season hitting .242 with 24 home runs and 58 RBI. In 2019, he had an even better year. He hit .291 with 35 home runs and 97 RBI. He was given the Louis M. Hatter Most Valuable Oriole Award for his excellent performance.

Battling Cancer and Returning to Baseball

On March 7, 2020, Trey left spring training for a medical procedure. On March 12, it was announced that doctors removed a malignant tumor from his colon. On April 28, Trey shared that he had stage 3 colon cancer and started chemotherapy. He missed the entire 2020 season while recovering. He finished his chemotherapy in November 2020.

In November 2020, Trey announced he was cancer-free and planned to play in 2021. He returned to the Orioles for spring training. When he had his first at-bat of the season in Baltimore, the crowd gave him a standing ovation. He finished the 2021 season hitting .255 with 21 home runs and 71 RBI. On November 22, 2021, Trey was awarded the American League Comeback Player of the Year Award.

On July 28, 2022, Trey hit a memorable inside-the-park home run. The ball was hit high and bounced off the glove of the outfielder, allowing Trey to run all the way around the bases. This happened on the same day that a beloved Orioles fan, Mo Gaba, had passed away two years earlier. Trey said it felt like Mo was helping him from the clouds.

Playing for the Houston Astros

The Orioles traded Trey Mancini to the Houston Astros on August 1, 2022. He hit a home run for his first hit as an Astro on August 3. On August 5, Trey hit his first career grand slam. A grand slam is a home run with the bases loaded, scoring four runs.

The Astros won their division title on September 19, 2022. This was Trey's first time winning a division title in his career. In 2022, between both teams, Trey hit .239 with 18 home runs and 63 RBI.

In Game 5 of the 2022 World Series, Trey made a game-saving play. He caught a hard-hit ball in the 8th inning, helping the Astros keep their lead. The Astros went on to win the World Series, giving Trey his first championship title!

Time with the Chicago Cubs

On January 20, 2023, Trey signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Cubs. He played in 79 games for the Cubs, hitting .234 with 4 home runs and 28 RBI. He was released by the Cubs on August 2, 2023.

Later Career Moves

Trey signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds on August 23, 2023. He played five games with their Triple-A team before being released on August 30.

On January 24, 2024, Trey signed a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins. He chose to leave the team on March 23, 2024, becoming a free agent.

On February 7, 2025, Trey signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He played in 74 games for their Triple-A team, the Reno Aces. He hit .308 with 16 home runs and 62 RBI. Trey was released by the Diamondbacks on July 1, 2025.

Trey Mancini's Personal Life

Trey Mancini has both Italian and Irish family roots. His great-grandfather, Antonio Mancini, started a food company called Mancini Foods in 1922. This company makes peppers, onions, and hot sauce. Trey's uncle, Rick Mancini, now runs the company.

Trey met Sara Perlman in 2017. She used to report on the Baltimore Orioles. They started dating later and got engaged in November 2021. Trey and Sara were married in December 2022.
