Howard Samuel "Trey" Thompkins III (born May 29, 1990) is an American professional basketball player. He is 6 feet 10 inches tall and plays as a power forward. Currently, he plays for Básquet Coruña in Spain's Liga ACB. Before turning pro, he played college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Trey's High School Basketball Journey

Trey Thompkins went to Wesleyan School in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. During his junior year, he played at Oak Hill Academy. There, he averaged 15.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

For his senior year, Trey returned to Wesleyan. He had an amazing season, averaging 27.5 points and 14.7 rebounds. He helped his team win the Georgia High School Association Class AA state championship. In May 2007, Trey decided to play for the University of Georgia starting in the 2008–2009 season. Many other schools wanted him too!

Experts at Rivals.com thought Trey was a top player. They ranked him as the 11th best power forward and the 30th best player in the entire nation in 2008.

Trey's College Basketball Career

Freshman Year at Georgia

In his first year with the Georgia Bulldogs, Trey was a standout player. He was named to the SEC All-Freshman team. He led his team in rebounds, grabbing 7.4 per game. He also had 31 blocks and was second in scoring with 12.6 points per game. Trey missed some early practices and games due to an injury.

Sophomore and Junior Seasons

In his second year, Trey's performance really took off. He averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds. Everyone agreed he deserved to be on the first team All-SEC selection.

Trey continued to play well in his junior year. The Bulldogs made it to the 2011 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. They were narrowly defeated by the Washington Huskies in the first round. Trey was again chosen for the first team All-SEC.

Trey's Professional Basketball Career

Starting with the Los Angeles Clippers

Trey Thompkins decided to leave college early to join the 2011 NBA draft on April 5, 2011. The Los Angeles Clippers picked him as the 37th player overall in the second round.

In his first season with the Clippers, Trey played in 24 games. He averaged 2.4 points and 1 rebound. In the summer of 2012, he got a bone bruise in his left knee during the NBA Summer League. This injury kept him off the court for almost two years. The Clippers released him on March 14, 2013.

Playing in Russia with Nizhny Novgorod

On August 4, 2014, Trey signed a one-year contract with the Russian team Nizhny Novgorod. His coach, Ainars Bagatskis, trusted him a lot. Trey played at least 20 minutes in most games in both the VTB United League and the EuroLeague.

In November, he had his first "double-double" in the EuroLeague. This means he scored double digits in two categories (14 points and 10 rebounds). Later that month, he grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds against Dinamo Sassari. In February, he scored a season-high 27 points and added 13 rebounds in a EuroLeague game. Nizhny Novgorod finished last in their EuroLeague group. Trey averaged 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game in the EuroLeague.

Success with Real Madrid

On August 26, 2015, Trey joined the famous Spanish team Real Madrid. He signed a one-year deal, and then extended it for two more years in July 2016.

In May 2018, Real Madrid won the 2017–18 EuroLeague championship! They beat Fenerbahçe Doğuş 85–80 in the final game. Trey averaged 9.5 points and 5.1 rebounds in 28 EuroLeague games that season. He signed another two-year deal with Real Madrid in July 2018.

In March 2020, Trey was the first professional basketball player in Europe to be diagnosed with the virus that causes COVID-19. He signed a three-year extension with Real Madrid in June 2020. After seven seasons, Trey left Real Madrid on June 27, 2022.

Recent Teams: Zenit and Crvena zvezda

On July 13, 2022, Trey signed with Zenit Saint Petersburg in the VTB United League.

More recently, on February 7, 2024, Trey signed with Crvena zvezda in Serbia. With this team, he won the Basketball League of Serbia and the Adriatic League championships. As of July 2025, he is playing for Básquet Coruña.

Trey's International Basketball Experience

Trey Thompkins played for the Under-19 United States national team. They competed in the 2009 Under-19 World Championship in New Zealand. The USA team won the gold medal! In 9 games, Trey averaged 10.6 points and 5 rebounds.

Trey's Family Life

Trey's father, Howard Thompkins Jr., also played college basketball. He played at Wagner College and was later drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 1981.
