Howard Samuel "Trey" Thompkins III (born May 29, 1990) is an American professional basketball player. He is 6 feet 10 inches tall. Trey plays as a power forward for Básquet Coruña in Spain's Liga ACB. Before turning pro, he played college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs.

High School Basketball Journey
Trey Thompkins went to Wesleyan School in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. During his junior year, he played at Oak Hill Academy. There, he scored about 15.8 points and grabbed 8.9 rebounds per game.
For his final year, Trey returned to Wesleyan. He helped his team win the Georgia High School Association Class AA state championship. He averaged an amazing 27.5 points and 14.7 rebounds. In May 2007, Trey decided to play for the University of Georgia. Many other schools also wanted him to join their teams.
Experts at Rivals.com thought Trey was a top player. In 2008, they ranked him as the 11th best power forward. He was also the 30th best player overall in the country.
College Basketball Career
In his first year with the Georgia Bulldogs, Trey was named to the SEC All-Freshman team. He led his team in rebounds (7.4 per game) and blocks (31 total). He was also second in scoring with 12.6 points per game. Trey missed some early practices and games due to an injury.
In his second year, Trey's performance got even better. He averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds. Everyone agreed he deserved to be on the first team All-SEC selection.
Trey kept up his strong play in his junior year. The Bulldogs made it to the 2011 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. They were narrowly beaten 68–65 by the Washington Huskies in the first round. Trey was again chosen for the first team All-SEC.
Before the NBA draft, some people worried about his body fat percentage. This was a common concern for players preparing for professional sports.
Professional Basketball Career
Los Angeles Clippers (2011–2013)
On April 5, 2011, Trey Thompkins announced he would leave Georgia. He decided to enter the 2011 NBA draft early.
The Los Angeles Clippers picked Trey as the 37th player overall. This was in the second round of the 2011 NBA draft. In his first season, he played 24 games. He averaged 2.4 points and 1 rebound. In the summer of 2012, Trey got a bone bruise in his left knee. This injury kept him from playing for almost two years. The Clippers released him on March 14, 2013.
Nizhny Novgorod (2014–2015)
On August 4, 2014, Trey signed a one-year contract. He joined the Russian team Nizhny Novgorod. His coach, Ainars Bagatskis, trusted him a lot. Trey played at least 20 minutes per game in both the VTB United League and the EuroLeague.
On November 6, he achieved his first EuroLeague double-double. He scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Anadolu Efes. On November 21, he had a season-high 15 rebounds against Dinamo Sassari. He also scored 13 points in that game.
On February 6, Trey scored a season-high 27 points against Unicaja. He also had 13 rebounds, helping his team win. This was his third EuroLeague game in a row with over 20 points. Nizhny Novgorod finished last in their EuroLeague Top 16 group. Trey averaged 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds in 23 EuroLeague games.
Real Madrid (2015–2022)
On August 26, 2015, Trey signed a one-year deal with the Spanish team Real Madrid. He signed a two-year extension on July 16, 2016.
In May 2018, Real Madrid won the 2017–18 EuroLeague championship. They beat Fenerbahçe Doğuş 85–80 in the final game. Trey averaged 9.5 points and 5.1 rebounds in 28 EuroLeague games that season.
On July 6, 2018, Trey signed another two-year deal with Real Madrid.
On March 12, 2020, Trey Thompkins tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19. He was the first professional basketball player in Europe to be diagnosed.
On June 9, 2020, Trey signed a three-year extension with the team. After seven seasons, Trey officially left Real Madrid on June 27, 2022.
Zenit (2022–2023)
On July 13, 2022, Trey signed with Zenit Saint Petersburg. This team plays in the VTB United League.
Crvena zvezda (2024–present)
On February 7, 2024, Trey Thompkins signed a contract with Crvena zvezda. This team plays in the Basketball League of Serbia, the Adriatic League, and the EuroLeague. He helped them win the Basketball League of Serbia and the Adriatic League championships.

International Career
Trey Thompkins played for the Under-19 United States national team. They competed in the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship in New Zealand. The USA team won the gold medal at this championship! Trey played in 9 games. He averaged 10.6 points and 5 rebounds per game during the tournament.
Personal Life
Trey's father, Howard Thompkins Jr., also played college basketball. He played for Wagner College. In 1981, the Atlanta Hawks drafted his father into the NBA.
