Trilby is a small community in the northeast part of Pasco County, Florida, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes, but it's not an officially incorporated town or city. In 2020, about 433 people lived there.
Trilby has a group called the "Greater Trilby Community Association." This group is a non-profit organization that works to make life better for people living in Trilby and nearby areas like Trilacoochee and Lacoochee.
This community is also the starting point for the Withlacoochee State Trail, which is a popular path for biking and walking.
Trilby's Story: A Look Back
Trilby wasn't always called Trilby. Its earlier name was Macon. The name Trilby started being used around 1895, but the post office didn't officially change from Macon to Trilby until 1901.
A very important person in the railroad business, Henry Plant, decided to change the town's name. He did this because there was already another town named Macon in Georgia, and he didn't want confusion. He said he named it "after the heroine of a story which has lately deeply moved me." He was talking about a famous book called Trilby by George du Maurier.
Trilby became an official town twice, but it didn't stay that way. It was first made a town by the state government on May 23, 1901. However, it stopped being an official town on May 11, 1909. It became a town again in 1913, but then it was disincorporated (meaning it stopped being an official town) for a second time on April 24, 1935.
Over time, Trilby lost its important railroad industry. Because of this, it has become more of a residential area. Many people who live in Trilby now work in nearby Dade City or even in the larger Tampa Bay region.
Where is Trilby?
