Trolley Square is a unique shopping center in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. It is known for its cool shops and restaurants. This special place is close to downtown Salt Lake City. You can even get there using the UTA TRAX light-rail system.

A Look Back: Trolley Square's History

From Streetcars to Shops

Trolley Square has a really interesting past. The buildings were first built in 1908. They were barns where Salt Lake City's streetcars were stored. Streetcars were like old-fashioned electric buses that ran on tracks.

The streetcar system stopped running in 1945. Then, in 1972, these old barns got a new life. They were turned into the two-story shopping center you see today.

Unique Design and Features

Trolley Square is famous for its unusual look. It has winding hallways and floors made of brick and wood. You can also see pretty fountains and old trees inside. There are even wrought-iron balconies.

Many cool stores and places are here. You can find Weller Book Works and Pottery Barn. There's also Cabin Fever, a popular card store. Other spots include Williams Sonoma and Old Spaghetti Factory. The Desert Edge Brewery at the Pub and The Spectacle are also popular. Plus, there are many local small shops.

The Famous Water Tower

A big water tower at Trolley Square is easy to spot. It is covered in red and blue neon lights. This tower is a famous part of the Salt Lake City skyline. You can see its lights from far away at night.

For many years, the tower was a special weather beacon. It would tell people the weather forecast using different colored lights.

  • Solid blue meant fair weather.
  • Flashing blue meant cloudy weather.
  • Solid red meant rain.
  • Flashing red meant snow.

The Trolley Square water tower was updated in 2014.

The Sky Bridge

Another cool part of Trolley Square is the sky bridge. This bridge connects the main building to a small parking lot across the street. The bridge used to be part of an ore conveyor. It came from a company in Tooele, Utah. The bridge goes over 600 South. It also has neon lights shaped like a trolley!
