Trousdale is a small, unincorporated community located in Edwards County, Kansas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government. It's found in Lincoln Township, about 9 miles south of Belpre and 13 miles north of Haviland.

What is Trousdale's History?

Trousdale began in 1915 when a new railroad junction was built there. The community was named after a Mr. Trousdale, who owned land nearby in Newton, Kansas.

Early Growth and Services

At its busiest, Trousdale had a bank, a grade school, a high school, and several shops. There were also two large buildings called grain elevators, used for storing crops. In 1927, electricity came to Trousdale when a "high line" was built. A post office opened in Trousdale in 1916, helping people send and receive mail. It stayed open for many years before closing in 1967.

Trousdale Today: A Look at the Community

By 2006, Trousdale was much smaller. It had a Methodist Church, a repair shop, a grain storage building, and a fuel station. Most people living there were involved in family farming. As of 2023, there are about eight homes in Trousdale. The gas station is currently closed, but it's not known if this is a permanent change.

How Did the 2007 Tornado Affect Trousdale?

On May 4, 2007, a very large tornado, about 2.2 miles wide, hit Trousdale. This happened shortly after an even stronger tornado (rated EF5) destroyed the town of Greensburg to the south.

Tornado Damage and Rebuilding Efforts

Much of Trousdale was badly damaged by the tornado, including the local church. The church was later rebuilt, showing the community's strength. The tornado that struck Trousdale was officially rated EF3, which means it caused significant damage. However, some people wondered if it might have been an even stronger EF5 tornado.
