Tu-Endie-Wei State Park is a special place in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. It sits right where the Kanawha River and the Ohio River meet. This park remembers an important event called the Battle of Point Pleasant.

The battle happened on October 10, 1774. It was fought between settlers from Virginia and forces led by Shawnee Chief Cornstalk. The settlers won this battle.

This victory helped weaken the bond between Native American groups and the British. It also allowed settlers from western Virginia to join the American Revolutionary War.

The name "Tu-Endie-Wei" comes from the Wyandot language. It means "the point between two waters" in English. This describes the park's location perfectly.

Remembering the Battle of Point Pleasant

The Battle of Point Pleasant is very important in American history. Some people, like the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, believe it was the first battle of the American Revolutionary War.

Who Can Join the D.A.R.?

The Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) is a group for women. To join, you must be a descendant of someone who helped in the American Revolution. This includes female descendants of the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant.

A Historic Debate

There is still some discussion among historians about whether this was truly the first battle of the American Revolution. However, its importance to the war is clear.

The Mansion House Museum

The park also features the historic Mansion House. This building was constructed in 1796. It was first used as a tavern, a place where people could eat, drink, and stay.

Visiting the Museum

Today, the Mansion House is a historic house museum. The Colonel Charles Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution runs the museum. You can visit it during certain times of the year. It helps visitors imagine what life was like long ago.
