Tu-Endie-Wei State Park is a special place in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. It's located right where the Kanawha River meets the Ohio River. This park remembers an important event called the Battle of Point Pleasant.

The name "Tu-Endie-Wei" comes from the Wyandot language. It means "the point between two waters," which perfectly describes the park's location.

Remembering the Battle of Point Pleasant

The park's main purpose is to honor the Battle of Point Pleasant. This battle happened on October 10, 1774. It was fought between settlers from Virginia and forces led by Shawnee Chief Cornstalk.

The settlers won this battle. Their victory helped weaken the bond between Native American groups and the British. It also allowed settlers from western Virginia to move across the Allegheny Mountains. This freedom was important because it let them join the American Revolutionary War.

Was it the First Battle of the Revolution?

Some people, like the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, believe the Battle of Point Pleasant was the very first battle of the American Revolutionary War. This group allows female descendants of battle veterans to join. However, historians still discuss whether this battle truly marks the start of the Revolutionary War.

Explore the Mansion House Museum

Inside the park, you can visit the 1796 Mansion House. This old building was once a tavern, a place where travelers could eat and stay. Today, it's a historic house museum.

The Colonel Charles Lewis Chapter of the D.A.R. runs the Mansion House Museum. It's open during certain times of the year, so you can step back in time and learn about life in the past.
