Jiang Bihou (simplified Chinese: 蒋壁厚; traditional Chinese: 蔣壁厚; pinyin: Jiǎng Bìhoù), known by his pen name Tu An (Chinese: 屠岸; pinyin: Tú'àn), was a famous Chinese poet and translator. He was born on November 22, 1923, and passed away on December 16, 2017.

Tu An was a member of the China Writers Association. He was the first person in China to write a sonnet in Chinese. He was also one of the first to translate the works of the English poet John Keats into the Chinese language. His translations are highly respected by experts around the world. His translation of Poetry of John Keats even won the 2nd Lu Xun Literary Prize, which is a big award in Chinese literature.

Early Life and Education

Jiang Bihou was born in November 1923 in Changzhou, Jiangsu, China. He came from a family that valued learning. His father, Jiang Ji, was an architect. His granduncle, Tu Ji, was a well-known historian. His uncle, Tu Kuan, was an educator and politician.

When Tu An was a child, his mother taught him about Chinese literature. He started publishing his own writings in 1941. He later studied at Shanghai Jiaotong University and graduated in 1946. In 1956, he became a member of the China Writers Association.

Later Life and Career

In July 1956, Tu An wrote an article called "Wanzhuan De Cubao" for People's Daily. In this article, he pointed out that some officials did not understand Chinese opera. He felt they would often unfairly criticize or stop performances.

Later, in January 1958, Tu An was sent to Huailai County, Hebei. He was assigned to work there for a period. In 1966, during a difficult time in China known as the Cultural Revolution, Tu An faced challenges. He was sent to work in Huailai, Hebei again with his wife. He was officially cleared of any wrongdoing in July 1972. In 1973, he began working at the People's Literature Publishing House.

Tu An passed away on December 16, 2017, at the age of 94.

Family Life

Tu An was married to Zhang Miaoying (章妙英). She was also a Chinese author and editor. She had graduated from Saint John's University. Zhang Miaoying passed away in 1998. Tu An and his wife had three children together.
