Tuleta's History
Tuleta was started in 1906 by Peter Unzicker. He was a Mennonite minister. He brought a group of Mennonites from Cullom, Illinois, to settle here. Unzicker bought land for the town. He named it after J. M. Chittim's daughter.
Early Development
The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway was built through the area in 1881. A train station opened in Tuleta in 1906. The town's post office began operating the next year. The Mennonite church, built in 1907, was also used as a school during the week.
In 1910, Amanda Stoltzfus started the Tuleta Agriculture High School. This was the first school of its kind in Texas. Teachers came from famous places like Smith College and the University of Wisconsin. Ms. Stoltzfus was the principal. She taught girls how to sew and cook. Boys learned manual skills and farming. The school even had dorms for students who lived far away.
Community Life and Growth
Tuleta once had three churches: Mennonite, Presbyterian, and Baptist. By 1990, only the Baptist church remained. Early businesses included a general store, a mill, a lumber yard, and coffee shops. There were also two hotels.
Oil and gas were found near Tuleta in 1929. At that time, about 150 people lived in the town. Several oil companies were still working there in 1990. Tuleta also had a grocery store and a community center. The town celebrates "Tuleta Day" every year. It happens on the second Saturday in August.

Tuleta is in the northern part of Bee County, Texas. You can find it at these coordinates: 28°34′22″N 97°47′48″W / 28.57278°N 97.79667°W. It is located on U.S. Route 181. Tuleta is about 12 miles north of Beeville. Beeville is the main town of Bee County.
The community covers an area of about 11.6 square kilometers (4.5 square miles). All of this area is land.
