Tuncel Tayanç Kurtiz (born February 1, 1936 – died September 27, 2013) was a famous Turkish actor. He worked in theatre, movies, and TV shows. He was also a playwright, meaning he wrote plays, and a film director. Starting in 1964, he acted in over 70 movies, including many made in other countries.

Early Life and Education

Tuncel Kurtiz was born in Bahçecik, a town in Kocaeli, Turkey. His father worked as a district governor, and his mother was a teacher. Because of his parents' jobs, his family moved around a lot across Turkey.

After finishing high school in Istanbul, Kurtiz went to Istanbul University. There, he studied English philology, which is the study of language in written historical sources.

A Career in Acting

Tuncel Kurtiz began his acting journey in theatre. From 1958 onwards, he performed on many stages in Istanbul. He acted in both state-run and private theatres.

His talent took him to stages around the world. He performed in Sweden at the Gothenburg City Theatre and the Royal Dramatic Theatre. He also acted in Germany at the Schaubühne in Berlin, and in Frankfurt and Hamburg. In England, he worked with the Peter Brook Shakespeare Royal Theatre. In the late 1970s, Kurtiz also directed plays for a German-Turkish theatre project.

Working with Yılmaz Güney

During his university years and military service, Tuncel Kurtiz became good friends with the well-known film director Yılmaz Güney. They worked together on several movies. One of their films, Umut (meaning "Hope"), was made in 1970. It was not allowed to leave Turkey, but a secret copy was shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

Tuncel Kurtiz's first movie role was in Şeytanın Uşakları in 1964. After that, he acted in many international movies and TV shows. He appeared in films from Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Israel, and India. He often spoke in the original language of the film.

Later Years and Passing

Tuncel Kurtiz passed away on September 27, 2013, at the age of 77. He died after falling and getting a head injury at his home in Etiler, Istanbul.
