Tungkillo is a small town in South Australia. It is located about 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of Mount Pleasant. The town sits on the Adelaide-Mannum Road.
Tungkillo is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) north-east of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is also 25 kilometers (15 miles) north-west of Mannum. In 2006, about 360 people lived in Tungkillo.

The Story of Tungkillo
How Tungkillo Got Its Name
The name "Tungkillo" first belonged to a mine. This mine was located south of Palmer and opened in 1847. In 1848, a town was planned near this mine.
The town we know today was started by Samuel Patten in 1861. He named it South Petherton. This name came from a town in Somerset, England, where his family was from. On January 24, 1906, the town's name was officially changed to Tungkillo. However, people sometimes used both names until as late as 1936.
What "Tungkillo" Means
The word "Tungkillo" comes from tainkila. This is a word from the Peramangk Aboriginal language. It means "ghost moth grubs."

Some old and important places in Tungkillo are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means they are protected because of their history.
- The historic former Terlinga Station Shearing Shed is on Hoads Woolshed Road. A shearing shed is where sheep are shorn for their wool.
- There is also a former grain threshing floor on Loxton Road. This was a place where grains like wheat were separated from their stalks.
