Turdo Vineyards & Winery (pronounced toor-DOH) is a special place in North Cape May, New Jersey. It's a family-owned business where grapes are grown to make different kinds of wine. The Turdo family first planted their grapevines in 1999.

The winery officially opened its doors to visitors in 2004. Today, Turdo Vineyards has 5 acres of land where grapes are carefully grown. Each year, they produce about 1,100 cases of wine. The winery is named after the Turdo family, who own and operate it.

What Kinds of Grapes Does Turdo Grow?

Turdo Vineyards is located in a special area called the Outer Coastal Plain AVA. This area is known for growing certain types of grapes. Turdo Vineyards is unique because it focuses on growing Italian grapes.

They grow many different kinds of grapes. These include Albariño, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. They also grow Nebbiolo, Nero d'Avola, Pinot gris, and Pinot noir. Other grapes grown here are Riesling, Sangiovese, Sauvignon blanc, and Syrah.

The Special Nero d'Avola Grape

Turdo Vineyards is most famous for its Nero d'Avola wine. This grape is very special. It is a red grape that originally comes from Sicily, an island in Italy. It has a very strong and pleasant smell.

Turdo Vineyards is one of only two wineries in the entire United States that uses the Nero d'Avola grape. This makes their wine very unique! The winery also sells its products under the names "Turis" and "DiLuca." These names honor the winery owner and his son.

How Turdo Vineyards Helps the Environment

Turdo Vineyards House
Turdo Vineyards & Winery is entirely powered by solar panels on top of the family's house.

One really cool thing about Turdo Vineyards is how they get their power. The entire winery uses solar energy! This means they use special panels to capture sunlight and turn it into electricity. Using solar power is a great way to protect the environment. It helps reduce pollution and saves energy.

Winery Rules and Recognition

Turdo Vineyards has a special permit called a farm winery license from New Jersey. This license allows them to make a certain amount of wine each year. It also lets them sell their products in different places. They can even ship wine to customers in New Jersey and other states.

The winery is part of the Outer Coastal Plain Vineyard Association. This group helps vineyards in the area work together. In 2009, Turdo Vineyards even got a shout-out on The Tonight Show by comedian Jay Leno! This helped more people learn about their unique wines and eco-friendly practices.
