Exploring Turner Mountain Ski Resort
Turner Mountain is a cool ski area found in the beautiful Kootenai Valley. This valley is surrounded by the Cabinet Mountains to the south and the Purcell Mountains to the north. The mountain is famous for its "fall-line powder skiing." This means you can ski straight down the mountain through soft, fresh snow.

The very top of Turner Mountain is 5,952 feet high. The base, where you start skiing, is 3,842 feet high. This gives skiers a vertical drop of 2,110 feet to enjoy. That's a lot of downhill fun!

Turner Mountain has 20 different ski trails for you to explore. To get up the mountain, there is one double chairlift. This chairlift helps skiers and snowboarders reach the top quickly. The mountain also gets a lot of snow, about 250 inches each winter!

Early Days in Libby
Libby, the town near Turner Mountain, used to be a place where people worked in mining and logging. In the late 1930s, some skiers from Libby decided they wanted their own ski area. They formed a group called the Kootenai Ski Club. Later, it became known as the Libby Ski Club.
Building the Ski Area
In the 1950s, the club started making plans to turn Turner Mountain into a real ski resort. Their hard work paid off, and Turner Mountain officially opened for skiing on New Year's weekend in 1961. After the first winter season, they added a T-bar lift to help people get up the mountain.
Upgrading the Lifts
The T-bar lift was over a mile long and was used for many years. But in the fall of 2001, it was replaced with a new double chairlift. This made it even easier and faster for skiers to reach the top of the mountain.
Who Runs Turner Mountain?
Turner Mountain Ski Area is special because it's run by volunteers! A non-profit group called the Kootenai Winter Sports Ski Education Foundation, Inc. manages the resort. This means many people give their time to make sure the ski area can stay open for everyone to enjoy.
The New Lodge
The resort also got help from the City of Libby. They received money to build a brand-new lodge. This new building was finished in February 2006. It provides a warm and cozy place for skiers to relax and get ready for their adventures on the slopes.
